If I buy from all the mailers, get the wine, and then declare bankruptsy, can I still drink the wine?

Wow, this is hard.  Managed to avoid ordering Carlisle (whew).  I am trying hard to resist Littorai.  I think that I would be better off throwing over KB for Littorai, but I am not ready to do that yet.

Down to:

Kosta Browne
Rivers-Marie
Aubert
Schrader
Ridge Monte Bello
Quilceda Creek
Alban

I do buy SQN from time to time if someone has extras, but not on the list.

I guess you could add Shane to my list. I forgot I signed up for that one. Probably shouldn't have.

These first couple months I am buying:
Kistler
Match
Bressler
QC
K-B (in another week or so)
Peay
Aubert
Benovia (small order)
DuMOL (coming soon)

and tossed the rest.

Next year I "plan to" drop Kistler, Aubert, QC
As far as "closed mailing lists" go, I am definately keeping K-B and DuMOL (is Bressler closed?...that too)
Baby steps.

The advantage of an allocation rather than a free-for-all is that you have some ability to pick your time to purchase. But if you hope to get wish list increases on low production wines, eg more Peay Roussanne-Marsanne or Viognier, it pays to be an early bird. Actually, it probably costs to be an early bird, but you know what I mean.

WIML, I can't believe that I am actually doing better than you thus far.  To date, I've only bought from 4 (Aubert, R-M, QC, KB).  I count 5 for you.

Of course, if you look at fewest bottles purchased (bought 2+ cases from each of Rivers-Marie and Kosta Browne), you're probably ahead, but I'll take my moral victories where I can get them.

Of course, that good feeling only lasts until you taste a terrific bottle that you passed on.

Yes, indeed!  It gets worse.  About half the time I have a really good bottle of wine I have to say, of course, we dropped them.

Dave,

I've purchased close to 2 mixed cases in total between those 5 producers.

Bob,

Actually, that doesn't bother me at all. I share what I have in my cellar with others and they do the same in return. In the end we all end up sharing some great wines together that otherwise we'd all never would've had the opportunity to taste. No regrets on my part. Just great memories.

A few wineries that I haven't seen mentioned in this thread (for wineries that don't merit a separate thread):
Harris
Big Basin
Pax
Kesner
Denner (special vertical set)

I'll be passing on all these. Think it is about time to ship my pax off to auction; I've had some really exceptional bottles, but a lot of misses as well. Harris - great wine., just not enough room in the cellar. Same story with Big Basin. I've never had a bottle of Kesner, so I'm not even tempted.

And another winery to pass on.... Lokoya! At $200/bottle, these are not even tempting.

And another... Hundred Acre, Ancient Way Shiraz. $200/bottle of Shiraz is way out of the league.

I will also be passing on the Herb Lamb E II White, Pali, Patz & Hall, L'Aventure, and Core.

Its odd, I think we need a thread "What wines are you NOT buying :-)"

Perhaps it is time to take stock.  I am never as successful at passing as I hope to be.  Here is my Spring mailer recap.  In many cases I ordered more, but sold extras at cost to friends.

Rivers-Marie - 25 bottles
Kosta Browne - 8 bottles
Aubert - 6 bottles
Peay - 6 bottles
Ridge - 6 bottles
Anthill Farms - 6 bottles
Scarecrow - 3 bottles
Quilceda Creek - 3 bottles
Alban - 2 bottles

Schrader will be coming soon so that'll make 75 bottles.  That's too many!  Where is WIML when I need him?

This year purchases:
Kistler - 48
Keefer - 3
August West - 6
Bressler - 12
Saxum - 5
Colgin - 3
Sloan - 6
Aubert - 15
Hourglass - 7
Kosta Browne - 18
Pride reserves - 20
SQN - 12
Sherwin - 6
Realm - 41
Turley - 21
Peay - 6
Alban - 6
Araujo - 24
Futo - 6
Sea Smoke - 12

Certain wines are shared with others (Turley,Kistler, Realm)  There were wines I passed on, Maybach, Scarecrow, Laventure, etc...  But with 270+ bottles in  the first 4 months, and considering I am only home half-time at best, I am obviously out of control.  First step is to admit the problem, correct?
Here are the only purchases I will plan on making the rest of this year:
Abreu
Alban
Araujo
Aubert
Paloma
Saxum
Shafer Hillside
Sine Qua Non
Switchback

On the cusp: Schrader, Herb Lamb
Out in the cold: Pride, Foley, Loring, hundred acre.

Apparently I have a strong preference for wineries that start with an "A" or an "S"
