Well, Saturday's tequila tasting wasn't as big of an event as they led us to believe

but, there was "a" BevMo buyer there and there were some special tequilas available for purchase. But they decided to not do the sniffing

We spoke with the representative for about an hour on every possible tequila subject you can think of. We're actually contemplating a trip to Jalisco Mexico to do some serious tequila tasting at the source.

So, without first tasting, or sniffing, we purchased the first two tequilas listed below. According to the Rep, The Tesoro was supposed to be an awesome tequila ranked 6 stars, the hightest rating, and voted number one Anejo by Wine Spectator magazine. The Oro Azul is number one in the US sales for repeat customers. Well, the Tesoro Azteca did not disappoint us in the least. It was a strong, full, sweet, caramel flavor tequila. But the Oro Azul was very different right from the get go. My fiancee wanted this tequila because it's tasting notes, and our rep, really emphasized the sweet, pear, medium mouth feel this tequila possessed. Oh man !!!! the smoke nose that came out of the bottle was just way to overpowering. We let it sit for about 1/2 hour then tasted, not sweet, no pear, but a ton of smoke flavor. So we let it sit another 2 hours! nope ...... just didn't cut it for our taste, the smoke was so overpowering that we didn't get much more than that . Ended up, my Dad tried it the next day and loved it, he bought the bottle from us. Go figure.
So the list below includes the two that we purchased plus three others that sounded very promising. I've included notes from the importer for your reading pleasure. One item not listed but gets the prize for the coolest item of the day was the El Senor Scorpion Mezcal. No worm in this bottle, they use a real, once live, scorpion! farm raised of course and yes you can eat it if you are the one to finish the bottle

Tesoro Azteca "Reserva" Anejo: Strong and pungent, this Anejo tequila is golden with hints of brown. Suave with mach agave intensity. Lots of agave along with wet cement and dried floral notes. Sweet and oily in the mouth. The flavors are first caramel, and then oak and agave. The finish is sweet and minty, caramel aftertaste.
Oro Azul Blanco: Strong and slightly pungent on the attack. High pear and wet cement aromas. Sweet with a medium mouth feel. High earthy agave and pear flavors with a slight white pepper and cutrus. The finish is long lasting, and tastes like a tequila version of pear eau de vie.
Raza Azteca Blanco: Strong and pungent on the attack, this colorless tequila has suave complexity and macho intensity. High earthy agave with moderate citrus, oak, and chamomile aromas. Medium sweet with medium mouth feel. High earthy agave flavors with moderate oak lead to a finish of caramel and agave flavors. The finish is medium sweet, medium bitter, and hot.
Arroyo Negro Blanco: Strong and pungent on the attack, suave complexity and macho intensity. Medium earthy agave with moderate oak, and chamomile aromas. Medium sweet with medium mouth feel. Medium agave flavors with moderate oak lead to a finish of caramel flavors. The finish is dry and hot.
Tonala Anejo: Shiny and luminous amber color with copper tones, full body. Intense nose with notes of cooked agave, raw agave, fruit and herbal notes with touches of spices such as cinnamon and vanilla. Harmonious notes of caramel, vanilla and wood that give it personality.
