Fodd for thought.

Several epidemiologic studies have suggested that wine reduces the incidence of adult onset diabetes, up to 80%.

The flip side is once you have diabetes, you shouldn't drink, because of wine effects and interactions with oral medications.

Any internists wish to comment on this catch 22.

Well, I hope that I don't have diabetes (@ all) for more reasons that this. But, this 1 of them. Or, any other major illnesses, for that matter.

Doesn't surprise me, seems like Wine reduces the incidences of many illnesses.

Although, hard to imagine life without Wine. Without many other things, I can manage I guess (you do what you have to...). W/O Wine?!?, would not be good...

I have diabetes: type 2 adult onset but I do take insulin. I am 60 years old and way overweight. My vet says I do not have to stop drinking.

When I drink alcohol it actually lowers my blood sugars. I understand this is true in about 50% of the cases. The more I drink the less insulin I have to take. Seriously. With good monitoring and good sense my diabetes is under control. Let me put it this way; I ain't gonna die from diabetes.

There are problems if you are taking medications that if taken with alcohol can adversly affect your liver. That is the problem. You must be aware.

That's a fairly interesting story davidn. I'm glad you are still able to enjoy this damned hobby of ours. Lowering blood sugar seems to contradict how wine sometimes reacts with me. If I drink A LOT of red wine, I have trouble sleeping at night. Presumably, that's because the wine breaks down into simple sugars that are pumping energy into a sleeping body... makes me very figidity. I of course, am no doctor and really don't know what's going on....

Can anyone shed some light?

If you drink wine, you get smarter....
