Can anyone describe this Italian wine ? What grapes is it made from ? How does it differ from a Rosso or a Brunello ?

Montepulciano is a tuscan wine region. It was elevated along with Barolo, Barbaresco, and Brunello di Montalcino to a DOCG in 1980. The name translates roughly to "The Noble wine of Montepulciano. It is made from Sangiovese but often has some Colorino in the blend. I have heard it described as having the fragrance and flavor of Chianti Classico and the body of Brunello. It is often irregular and Parker has said that it usually is not worth the elevated price tag that is paid vs good Chianti Classico. That is unless you are drinking Avignonesi which is fantastic! Montepulciano makes Vino Nobile, Rosso, and Riserva versions that are aged in barriques to soften the harsh edges that it often has. It is not as intense as Brunello but in most cases is just as rough. In my opinion the villages greatest contribution to wine is Vin Santo, the golden dessert wine that melts in your mouth. I just bought one for $20 that I felt was excellent when I tried it. '00 Fattoria di Palazzo Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Very well done. jb

I'll keep an eye out for that JB. That's much less then the Big "A". Being selective is very important in this region, but when doen right they are very tasty wines.

Besides Avignonesi the other top winery is Poliziano. They make a normal Vino Nobile, their high end "Asinone" and occasionally "Asinone Reserve." For the 1999 vintage, their normal Vino Nobile was IMO just as good as the Ausone at half the price. (EUR 30 vs 16 in Italy)

one of the best and most consistent producer is boscarelli. in italy, most vino nobiles are about half the price of what you would find in this country.

I opened a bottle of di majo norante and noticed the cepage, prugnolo and aglianico. unsure what the grape was, i looked up prugnolo, and found out it's another name for sangiovese, in this case the grosso variety. in the case of VNdM, the region of montepuliciano will often refer to sangiovese as prugnolo. i learn something new every day.
