| October’s gathering of the North Texas Winos took place at preferred’s home. Thank you so much to the preferreds for opening their lovely home to us wine guzzling animals. The theme was “Que Sera, Syrah! Syrahs from Around the World”.
There were eleven attendees to this month’s event. Winos present were Mr & Mrs preferred, BubbaP & Kim, Amy & Christian, WineDrinkerOfTexas, Mike M, Mr & Mrs wineismylife and last minute surprise guest THE 291.
As we were setting up and waiting for all of the attendees to arrive we had the WS TAA for October as a warmup: 2000 Fontodi Chianti Classico.
After the quick warmup it was time for the main event. All wines were served blind. All participants used Riedel Syrah glasses (I don’t remember the series) with the exception of Mr & Mrs wineismylife that used Speigelau Authentis Magnum glasses.
Here were the wines for the evening in the order in which they were served:
1999 Penfold Bin 28 Shiraz 1989 Chave Hermitage 2001 Yoakum Bridge Syrah Dry Creek Valley 1998 Chateaux du Ampuis Cote Rotie 1999 Belle Père & Fils Crozes-Hermitage Cuvée Louis Belle 2000 Chateau Reynella Basket Pressed McLaren Vale 2001 Hazy Blur Adelaide 2001 Marquis Phillips S9 Shiraz 1999 Neyers Napa Valley Hudson Vinyard RINGER: 1999 Stags Leap Winery Petite Sirah 2002 Marquis Phillips S9 Shiraz 2000 Mengler View Shiraz Barossa Valley
Bonus wines for the evening brought by THE 291:
2000 Lewis Alec’s Blend Syrah 2000 Guigal Hermitage
Capstone wine at the end of the evening: 1995 Penfolds Grange
After the voting was completed the final rankings stood as follows: (1) 2000 Chateau Reynella Basket Pressed McLaren Vale (2) TIED - 1999 Neyers Napa Valley Hudson Vinyard (2) TIED - 2001 Yoakum Bridge Syrah Dry Creek Valley (4) 2001 Marquis Phillips S9 Shiraz (5) 1998 Chateaux du Ampuis Cote Rotie (6) 2002 Marquis Phillips S9 Shiraz (7) RINGER: 1999 Stags Leap Winery Petite Sirah (8) 1989 Chave Hermitage (9) 1999 Penfold Bin 28 Shiraz (10) 2001 Hazy Blur Adelaide (11) 1999 Belle Père & Fils Crozes-Hermitage Cuvée Louis Belle (12) 2000 Mengler View Shiraz Barossa Valley
I’m sure others will post their notes on each of the wines. Here are my general impressions of each:
2000 Fontodi Chianti Classico Italy
Served at the October 18th North Texas Winos Tasting.
Purchased locally at Central Market for $24.00 a bottle.
Opened and served immediately without decanting in Spigelau Authentis Magnum glasses. Served alone with no food.
Light ruby color in the glass, clear to center. Nose was earthy up front, turning towards mushrooms in the middle and finishing with a slight dustiness. Flavors were mostly cherry with some raspberry amd a tart finish. Fairly well balanced and straightforward wine although I feel the alcohol is a bit lacking. Overall I’d rate the wine around 88 points. Drink at your leisure.
1999 Penfold Bin 28 Shiraz
Served SINGLE BLIND at the October 18th North Texas Winos Tasting.
Color was garnet, clear to center. The nose was slightly muted, not giving way much in the way of fruit. Flavors were dominated by cherries with a hint of chocolate on the finish. Wine was fairly well balanced other than the slightly subdued alcohol. 88 points. Ready to drink over the short term.
1989 Chave Hermitage
Served SINGLE BLIND at the October 18th North Texas Winos Tasting.
Light garnet color in the glass that was clear from rim to center. Nose was very earthy with mushrooms. There was a little smoke and pepper towards the finish. Palate was light and easygoing, following along with aromas from the nose. Very well balanced with just a little lacking in the alcohol department. 89 points. Drink now.
2001 Yoakum Bridge Syrah Dry Creek Valley
Served SINGLE BLIND at the October 18th North Texas Winos Tasting.
Dark ruby color in the glass and slightly opaque at center. Huge nose of blueberries, smoke, tobacco and earth. Flavors of blueberries, black cherries and boysenberries. Perfectly balanced wine. 90 points. Ready to drink over the short term.
1998 Chateaux du Ampuis Cote Rotie
Served SINGLE BLIND at the October 18th North Texas Winos Tasting.
Dusty garnet color. Nose of chocolate and red licorice that carried through to the palate. Balanced wine. 90 points. Drink over the short term.
1999 Belle Père & Fils Crozes-Hermitage Cuvée Louis Belle
Clear garnet color. Nose of earth, heavy Brett and black licorice. Flavors of mushrooms with a slight bitter earthly finish. Tannins and acids are just not there any longer. 87 points at best. Drink up.
2000 Chateau Reynella Basket Pressed McLaren Vale
Garnet to ruby color. Earthy nose of cherries, licorice and eucalyptus. Earthy palate of blueberries and plums. If this isn’t a McLaren Vale Shiraz I’ll eat the counter top. 90 points. Drink over the next 5 years.
2001 Hazy Blur Adelaide
Garnet color. Pepper and tobacco nose. Chocolate, blueberries and a hint of cloves. 91 points. Drink over the next 3-5 years.
2001 Marquis Phillips S9 Shiraz
Ruby color that is slightly opaque. Huge nose here baby. Tons of mint, pepper and spice. Jammy mouthfeel of berries and chocolate. Wine seems a little out of balance. 88 points. Drink again in a year to see if it improves.
1999 Neyers Napa Valley Hudson Vinyard
Dusty ruby color. Earthy nose and palate. Mostly picked up what seemed like sweet tarts. Hard to evaluate. 88 points maybe? No drinking window given.
RINGER: 1999 Stags Leap Winery Petite Sirah
Garnet and slight dusty. Nose of leather and smoke. If this isn’t the ringer I don’t know anything. Decent wine though. Maybe high 80s to low 90s?
2002 Marquis Phillips S9 Shiraz
Dark ruby color that is dusty throughout. Spicey pepper nose and huge blueberry palate. This has got to be another McLaren Vale wine. Good balance in this obviously young wine. 90 points. Let it sit another year and retaste.
2000 Mengler View Shiraz Barossa Valley
Dusty garnet color. Mint nose. Not getting much else by way of the nose or palate. Too difficult to evaluate.
2000 Lewis Alec’s Blend Syrah
Clear ruby color. Soft and inviting nose of cedar and red licorice. Nice palate of cherries and berries. I’d peg this in the low 90s. No drinking window.
2000 Guigal Hermitage
Ouch! What is this? Garnet color. Mocha and smoky nose. Huge amounts of fruit on the palate here. Difficult to pin them down at this point in the game. Something is happening with this wine. What is it? Low to mid 90’s. I bet this puppy can go for a while.
1995 Penfolds Grange
No notes taken on this wine. Simply sat around with good friends and enjoyed. My palate is fatigued at this point but I think I agree with THE291, I think this thing is a little disjointed at the moment. I’d let it sit at least two more years before trying again. Note to self: don’t drink 14 fruit bombs beforehand! | | Joe ----- Wine is like potato chips around me...if it's open, it's gone. | |
