94 WS; 94 RWP; 89-90 WT; $55

Here are some quick TNs on a Spanish blockbuster. This is only the second year of this production and is a blend of Carinena, Merlot and Cab. The nose is mostly oaky and a bit flinty. In the middle it has some plum, cassis and tobacco but the fruit is in the background. There is an intriguing stoniness that starts on the nose and continues through and on the finish. This is not elegant wine but is complex, balanced and has high acidity. WS calls it “savage and rustic”. Definitely. If you like he-man cabs this one might be for you.

I’m very happy I had a chance to taste this before opening a bottle at home. It is a baby and filled with oak. Only time will tell whether the oak will integrate. If it does it will be the blockbuster the critics predict. I’m going to stick with a couple of bottles for now and not open until 2004 minimum.
