Any ideas? What gives? It seems that some get hit with this a lot. Why?

Huge productions levels is one culprit. When you start churning out 30, 40, + thousand cases of a wine you are bound to start getting variation.

It can also happen due to blending practices, and on large numbers of bottles the blending can differ from btle # 1 to bottle # 1,000,000. Not so much in terms of the varietal blend but the blend of vineyards/terroir/sites etc...
