| | Do you think that drinking Spirits numbs your ability to notice high levels of alcohol in wine? Over the course of the last year I have developed quite a taste for a good Martini. The pressence of the Alcohol in the Vodka doesn't shock my taste buds any more. Do you think that will cary over to wine tasting? | | | |

| My completely unscientific answer with no data to back it up is...probably.
I drink martini's or Scotch on the rocks when I reach for an adult beverage other than wine. I don't seem to mind the higher alcohol wines that some people find bothersome. It's very possible that has something to do with it.

| Confessions of a Wine addict:
I'm not sure whether this is addressing your question, TCK, but I stopped drinking any hard liquor (Scotch, thank you) years ago on any occasions when I intend to drink wine afterwards, which is pretty much every day.
It didn't numb my ability to taste the alcohol in wine; it numbed my ability to taste the first glass or two of wine, period. For me, it just came down to which sensation I enjoyed more: the taste of Scotch, or the taste and texture of wine. The choice was pretty easy for me.
I rarely drink liquor now unless it's Cognac or occasionally Scotch late in an evening when I haven't had any other alcohol that night. Funny thing is, when I drink liquor now I swirl it in the glass, and swish it around my mouth for a while before swallowing. It's almost like I need a wine substitute.

| Me too, Seaquam/TCK. I stopped drinking ALL other alcoholic beverages after I was introduced to Wine. An occasional Cognac XO (as an after-Dinner drink, rarely).
1 of the reasons for the 360deg switch from Hard Liquor to Wine ONLY: When I was still converting to Wine (in the early stages) & was going back-&-forth @ parties (Wine & Hard Liquor). I realized very fast (after a few such parties) that I did Not appreciate the Wine (as much) as drinking Wine (alone) & actually got killed (you know what I mean---too much alcohol), never mix alcohol (they say).
So, the end result...is obvious. A hobby (obsession) that takes wayyy more $$$ from me than I ever intended/thought that it would.

| Funny you should mention wayyy more $$$, l_c_c.
Since I don't drink them so often, and because they last so long in my home, I buy much more expensive Scotches and Cognacs than I used to.
Well, that and the fact I'm sooooooo much more sophisticated than I used to be.

| | I honestly can't remember the last time I had any hard liquor, well, other than cognac about 1.5 years ago... | | www.roguefood.com -- www.cellartracker.com | |

| | Ever since I became 'addicted' to good wine, my consumption of hard liquor has virtually disappeared, except for an occasional snort of Irish Whiskey. | | | |

| IMO, Spirits and fine wine do not mix. Every once in a while I'll injoy a Martini or a gin & Tonic, but generally would rather enjoy the wine without my senses being hindered.
However, I still very much enjoy a good Eau de Vie after a fine meal.
