Delivered to the door today, chilled, popped, and poured.  Wow.  Delicious from the get go.  Beautiful light gold in color, nose of red apples and oaky vanilla, fine but reticent mousse, full flavored with medium to light acidity.  This is like the 95 in my opinion.  I like Taittinger for its elegance and lightness on the palate; this is clearly the richest wine they make.  I've tried other vintage champagnes that are not grand marque, and this is my favorite of them all.  The flavors seem integrated and it is a pleasure to drink now and over the next 5-7 years.  No bitterness, no excessive oakyness or alcohol, no oxydation.  Just wonderful silky fruit.  Great balance.  92+ points.

*This may improve as the wine sits, it has been doing a lot of traveling lately.

Nice work Saut. Does the UPS guy have any bruises? ;)

Good review, this one isn't widely available quite yet although I noticed a couple of places.

Winetex...for some reason, this one always eludes me in good vintages.  The last batch I could find was a lot of 19 bottles of the 95 which was covered with dust from a distributor's warehouse.  They don't carry this in most of the shops that I frequent.

Deeelicious.

I think I've asked you before but where did you purchase this from?

FYI, we had the 2002 Taittinger Comtes Rose this weekend and it was very good.

I did a special order from San Francisco Wine Trading Company...www.sfwtc.com.  They also have a few bottles in stock.

Another one tonight. This is the "heaviest" or "richest" style in the Taittinger fold. The 2002 is now starting to fill out. I don't know how these will age, but they will keep me off of the Comtes '96s for a few years. Good mousse, medium small bubbles. Turning a bit yellow gold, with rich integrated flavors of green apple, pinot fruit, toast and a hint of caramel. Rich, medium to long finish. Hint of acidity. Drinking very well now.

Saut, funny you should compare it to the '95. The '95 was the first champagne that I "cellared" in a 30 bottle cooler(it's been a while!). They aged very nicely as I think the '02 will do.

Anyway based on your comments and past experience with the wine purchased a case of these from D&M. We tried a bottle last night and at ~$60 in the door these are a good value in vintage champagne. MUST lock these up though as they taste pretty good now. I'll post a TN later. Perhaps the '96 Comtes will stay safe.

Hey Winetex...glad you enjoyed it. Oddly enough, someone brought a bottle of the new NV La Francaise as a host gift and it is really nice!!! Much richer than the ones I bought from Premier Cru a few years ago. I think that the new batch is a winner, and hope to find some mags!!! But at $38, I almost want to just find more vintage...

Must go on a champagne tasting binge next weekend...after my software release.

Cheers!
