2001 Mondavi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

This wine was tasted blind alongside the following 5 wines over a 4 hour period by cabhead, 6831, and myself. The 2001 Mondavi Reserve Cabernet received 3 votes for WOTN. All 6 wines though were of excellent quality.

2001 Joseph Phelps Insignia
2001 Seavey Cabernet
2001 Spottswoode Cabernet
2001 Clark Claudon Cabernet
2001 Macauley Cabernet

Saturated black/ruby coloration with a full elegant body. Somewhat restrained nose at first, this slowly revealed a bouquet of kirsch liquor, beef blood, anise, flowers and tobacco. Echoing the nose the palate also adds cocoa, black raspberry and a touch of BBQ spice. The finish is long and meaty lasting 50+ seconds. Though strong in rich tannins this chewy wine shows wonderful balance at this stage with proper acidity and a deep core of focused fruit. I will be adding this to my cellar. Score 95+ points.

Very interesting, given the recent history of this winery

I think this wine is always excellent in good vintages and would expect no less this year. Moreover, I think this wine ages as well as any Cal Cab out there. I get the bagging of Mondavi overally, but certainly don't understand why anyone would consistently dislike this wine.

2001 Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve
Had to open this up for a toast to the great man who helped to revolutionize the wine industry in CA.
Popped and poured.  Medium to deep hue, very nice purple garnet.  Very forward, pronounced nose, my wife and parents all commented on the aromas (always a great thing when you're sitting outside on a windy evening) which included nice notes of black fruits, spicy oak, and expresso beans.  Medium bodied and very elegant.  Currant & cassis, plums, vanilla bean, and minerals.  Herbaceous notes lingered on the plus finish.  The tannins of the 2001 vintage are certainly still apparent and could use another 2 years to settle for my taste.
A classy wine from a great vintage that worked wonderfully as my small, impromptu homage to a true pioneer.  RIP Robert.
