I had this as the starter to kick off the VC Rocks at Equinox event on 3/29/03.

While I was not yet settled down enough to really properly enjoy this, I must say that this is probably the best champagne I have ever had. Or at least in a long, long while. It was nice at toasty with some bread and nuts floating about it at well. Hints of honey made their way up my palate, too. This was a really, really enjoyable bottle of bubbly.

Up and down their line-up, Veuve Cliquot is my favorite Champagne house. And besides- you get a picture of old lady Cliquot on top of every cork! My very favorite Champagne is Taittinger Comptes de Champagne Rose, but at every level, other than tete de cuvee, I'll take Veuve Cliquot.

skwid, must disagree. I look for elegance in Champagne, rather than power. It seems to me that Krug is to Veuve Cliquot what Oregon Pinot Noir is California Pinot Noir. Krug is too big for me.

Well Board-o we'll have to agree to disagree. I've had several Krug's and I really like them. The Veuve's just don't float my boat. I've had the 1990 La Grand Dame several times and I'd rather have the Krug Grand Cuvee. Btw, the 1985 Krug is drinking great right now. The 1988 is a bit young so I'd wait on it. The 1989 is pretty good but not up to the first two. I'm just wondering if Krug will ever release their 1990. When they do it should be fantastic.

Mr. Winetex gave me an '88 Krug for my birthday. I'm practically slavering over it but haven't found the right food. It just may be sushi.

I've always enjoyed her wines, but Madame Cliquot is one foul-looking woman. And I'll never forgive her and my friends for the miserable state I was in hours after entering this millenium.

I am not much of a champagne drinker, but this was wonderful. Creamy, bright, just a little toasty, a wonderful starter to a great dinner and wines.

I think that really good champagne, like this was, can be magical. But sadly my exposure to really good champagne has been fairly limited thus far. Perhaps something I need to delve into a little deeper...

TJ - if you can get down to the New Orleans weekend I'm bringing a beauty of a champagne in mag.

'88 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvee Winston Churchill

JW1 gave it a 96 in the first issue of the Oeno-File.

winetex you're killing me! I am not going to be able to make it to New Orleans, darn it.

Well, if I tried real hard, I probably could swing it, but probably not. I will live vicariously through your TNs instead.

Resurrecting an old thread here - This was another one of our "palate cleanser" champagnes before the Freeman Caves dinner on 2/9/08.
