This past Saturday night we had dinner at TJ and Debbie's home in Laurel, MD - the theme of the night was "rustic" and not knowing the foods we brought some interesting wines for the meal. Their lovely home was renovated recently and I have to say they have a pretty kick-butt kitchen! In attendance were the T-Reps, the Corkages, the JohnnyB's (yes, he's alive) and myself - cooking were Thomas and Debbie, and boy did they cook. We started off with a soup from a Daniel Boulod recipe (chestnut, celery root and truffle oil) that was mighty fine. Then we had a palate-cleansing dish of green beans with a mustard sauce. The third course was sublime - crostini with sliced avocado, marinated sardines and scallions. Absolutely fantastic. The fourth was a sausage in plum sauce dish with polenta - quite tasty! There was then a cheese course, followed by a lovely apple tart with goat cheese. The wines: Egly-Ouriet NV V.P. E. Sauzet 2002 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Les Perrieres Aubert 2003 Ritchie Vineyard Chardonnay Bonneau du Martray 1999 Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru Producer name? 1997 Brunello di Montalcino Vilafonte 2003 Series "M" Araujo 2000 Syrah SQN 1999 Mr. K the Nobleman Reiussec 2002 Sauternes The Egly-Ouriet was my favorite wine of the night - that junx is a baby Krug!� Thanks again to Thomas and Debbie for a wonderful evening - I'm still dreaming about the sardines!�

Gotta agree with you on the VP - I haven't written too much about it (mainly because I like it a LOT!) and it's hard to get. Sounds like a fun evening with lots of good company, food and wine!

Yes a very nice time. The evening reminded me why we do these dinners despite the hard work and planning: great wines, food and company. I loved the chestnut soup and of course, the braised pork sausage and polenta. My favorite white wine was the Corton Charlemagne and Reds were the Vilafonte and SQN Syrah. Man, we'll have to get back to a semi-monthly schedule with these dinners.

The Brunello was a Col D'Orcia. It was one without any sulfites in it, too as we brought it back with us from Italy in 2003. It was drinking rather well I thought. For the whites, I have to agree that the Corton Charlemagne was outstanding. I did enjoy the Champagne, though, too. For the reds, I think it was neck in neck for me for the Brunello and the Araujo. I enjoyed trying the Vilafonte, too. It was not Debbie's favorite at all, but I liked the chalkiness in it. Not my favorite of the night, but good! As for the dessert wines, I liked them both, but I give the nod to the SQN Mr. K. The Mr. K was stunningly good. As for the evening itself....Despite the fact that everyone got stuck in DC Beltway traffic coming on over to the place on the wrong side of the tracks that is Prince George's County, I think it worked out really well. We got to see how a dinner party sized group took to our remodeled dining/living room space (especially how the big red monster (sofa) was used). And we got to eat well, drink well, and have a good time with everyone. My favorite dishes of the night were the crostini and the apple/goat cheese tart. I liked all of it of course (I thought we over-braised the sausages, though, dang it), but those are my favorites. Congrats again, jaimetown on the excellent news! And it was great to meet johnnyb's lady -- they are perfect for each other!

sounds like a great night. i haven't had one of the M series. stocked up on the C after Jaimetown introduced it at Lavandou. i bet the Aubert seemed a little out of place sandwiched between those burgs.
