| Has anyone had a chance to try this wine? If not this wine does anyone have thought on this producer or previous vintages of this one? $30 and Tanzer 87-90 it seems like a solid buy. However I'm still a Burg novice and and advice would be helpful. This is a 2005.

| I've tasted about 20 different offerings of F. Magnien or M. Magnien (M. Magnien is estate fruit made by Frederic Magnien; F. Magnien is Frederic Magnien's negociant operation (buys fruit not juice/finished wine though)) from the 2005 vintage. Unfortunately I have not tasted this bottling.
Regardless there has not been a miss yet imo (although I was not totally enamoured with the F. Magnien Vosne Romanee Vielles Vignes and don't think the extra cash is warranted for the F. Magnien Grands Echezeaux). I have heavily bought these wines (initially about 12 cases but I'm already down to less than 10 in the cellar) in 2005. I'd buy this wine if I were you. | | | |

| FWIW I've purchased the following F. Magien 2005s. These were the wines that I thought intersected the best with quality and (gasp!) price. They were fairly expensive but should prove to be good buys if Tanzer and Burghound know anything. They are a mix of Premier Cru and one Grand Cru.
2005 Frédéric Magnien Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes Vieilles Vignes
2005 Frédéric Magnien Charmes-Chambertin
2005 Frédéric Magnien Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Ruchots
2005 Frédéric Magnien Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots
Chilly - have you checked out 2001s for Burgundy buys? Woodland Hills is having a sale right now and has a PDF of their entire inventory. There might be some interesting buys there. | | | |

Thanks for the advice. I'll be picking some up. Are the one's at PC for $60 for the extra $$? Or would one be better off looking else where or stocking up on more of this one?

I picked up some Lambrays from them a little bit ago. If there are any that jump out at you there please pass them my way. I'm buying selectively with a little one on the way shortly.

(Actually I'm glad you posted about this because these wines at PC did not used to be available and I've stopped regularly checking their website for 05s. As a result I just picked up another five cases of assorted Magniens many of which are in stock now (ALWAYS a good thing when buying from PC))
But the following bottling is an absolute must buy imo:
F. Magnien Vosne Romanee Brulees
I've bought almost 6 cases of this wine (I just added a case from PC); drank almost a case of it already even though I shouldn't be drinking them now; and bought a bottle off the list at The French Laundry for $275 (believe it or not that price is relatively decent on that list). Bob Bressler bought a case from me and and also thought it was a terrific wine and wanted to purchase more after tasting it. | | | |

| | You've got some fine ones for sure Winetex. I haven't tasted the CM Charmes but the other three I have. The Charmes Chambertin was very good (I have a couple in the cellar) but from both a quality and value perspective I bought more Premier Crus (the aforementioned Brulees and CM Borniques in particular). The Les Ruchots was impressive and after tasting I managed to buy some magnums of it. The Les Suchots is a definite buy as well imo. | | | |

| The trouble with the '05 vintage is that too many producers made great wine. I keep toying with the idea of another Magnien raid at PC, particularly since prices haven't moved since I bought in January, but I can never pull the trigger.Â
I guess I'll have to be content with my six bottles. Now if they would give me another crack at $90 Clos des Lambrays.... | | | |

| That's true Winetex. Unfortunately save for the case I bought today of the Brulees from PC all of my other bottles cost $90 each (North Berkeley bottles - the PC bottles may not be North Berkeley fyi). At least all of the bottles are already resting in my cellar. North Berkeley has been sold out of this wine for quite some time (I checked with them directly in order to try and acquire more wine a month or two ago) | | | |

| I also bought my Magniens from NB. I've found the provenance of their wines to be superb. Plus they arrive in a reasonable time frame.
The Brown Derby (a pretty good store) has the Brulees in-stock for $89. | | | |

Both got nice ratings from Tanzer. I'm not sure what others here or Burghound thinks of them.
