  • 1999 Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin Champagne Brut Rosé Vintage (Reserve) - France, Champagne (11/12/2006)

Light pink in color with strawberries, spices aromas and flavors that picked up a slight herbal element on the palate. It had a huge structure and very vibrant mousse. It seemed tight and took a while to open up. There is potential for improvement. We served this as an aperitif and it was a mistake as it was fairly powerful to start off a meal. [~$50 on release and fairly priced for Vintage Rose; Next bottle in a 2008] (89 pts.)

Opened and poured as an aperitif, and after reading Winetex's note, realized it might be a mistake, but...

Rich salmon color, full expressive nose of strawberry jam, medium to full bodied with strawberry, red currant flavors and medium acidity. We enjoyed this with crab cakes and, since my favorite wines are petite syrahs and Sauternes, this went over quite well. Don't know if that is good or bad.

Comparable in quality IMO to the Billecart, but I don't see aging this one for many years. I'll have to try a few more to make sure I like them...

The only mistake we made was opening it without much food. The acidity was fairly strong and it didn't have much charm minus food. No mistake with crab cakes I'm sure. That sounds good.

This champagne is technically correct but just doesn't do much for me.  We opened this one at the end of our meal with some cooked food rather than the sashimi/sushi.  Others like this style a lot more than I do.
