DALLAS OFFLINE WITH STEVE8 - Il Sole, Dallas, TX (4/11/2007)

steve8 came to Dallas and of course just had to get together with the DAWGS for a little wine, some good food and one heck of a conversation. On to the show:
Chardonnay flight

2004 Peay Vineyards Chardonnay Estate - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
WIML90,NOWA,NOWS

Tasted April 11, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Balloon Magnum glass. Light yellow color in the glass, clear hue thoughout. Nose of lemon, pear, paraffin and a little nutmeg. Flavors of lemon, yellow apple, minerals and a little pineapple on the finish. Medium acidity, light to medium body. Good balance. Drink over the short term. Tasted twice with consistent notes. (90 pts.)

2004 Walter Hansel Winery Chardonnay Cahill Lane - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
WIMLNR,WA91,NOWS

Tasted April 11, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Balloon Magnum glass. Yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Strong aromas of sulphur that never fully disapated even two hours after opening. Bottle was obviously flawed in some manner. Rating withheld. NR (flawed)

2005 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos - France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
WIML92-93?,NOWA,NOWS

Tasted April 11, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Balloon Magnum glass. Light yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Slightly subdued nose of whetstone, lychee and a little citrus fruit. Flavors of minerals, lime and peach. Later a dash of crème on the finish. Medium acidity and body. Good balance. This is obviously a very young Chablis so I’d recommend holding until at least the 2010-2012 range before tasting again. My white WOTN. (92 pts.)

2002 Newton Chardonnay Unfiltered - USA, California, Napa Valley
WIML91,WA96,NOWS

Tasted April 11, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Balloon Magnum glass. Yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of butter, vanilla, pear and yellow apple. Flavors of bitters up front (very odd) with some notes of pear, crème and vanilla. Medium acidity, medium to full bodied. Not showing as well as my last tasting in September 2005 so I’m downgrading my previous score to WIML91. Drink now. (91 pts.)

2002 Martinelli Chardonnay Sea Ridge Meadow Three Sisters - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
WIML90,WA95,WS89,NOWS

Tasted April 11, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Balloon Magnum glass. Light yellow color in the glass, slightly opaque looking. Slightly subdued nose showing mostly simple aromas of pears and apples. Flavors of vanilla, crème and apples. Light to medium acidity, medium body. Probably served too cold but upon revisit didn’t seem to improve any. Barely cracks the WIML90 barrier. Drink now. (90 pts.)
Pinot Noir flight

2005 Belvedere Pinot Noir - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
WIML87-88?,NOWA,NOWS

Tasted April 11, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Balloon Magnum glass. Garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose is what I call a “classic Rosella’s vineyard” nose that seems almost “grapefruity” or “citrusy” up front with some underlying black cherries. Flavors of red berries, raspberries and a little bitters on the finish. Light to medium acidity, medium to firm tannins (expected) and light to medium bodied. This very young wine can be drank now with some time in the decanter or preferably held a little while, maybe 6 months to a year before trying again. Based on the pricing from the winery for the 2004 vintage (about $29.00 a bottle iirc) this is recommended on a QPR basis. (87 pts.)

2003 Domaine Serene Pinot Noir Evenstad Reserve - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
WIML91,WA89,WS92

Tasted April 11, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Balloon Magnum glass. Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose was a bit earthy/dusty smelling with some notes of black cherries and white pepper. Flavors of black cherries, mixed berries and red cherries. Medium acidity, tannins and body. Can be drank now with some time in decanter or better held 6 months to a year. Well got ahead and call this one my WOTN. (91 pts.)

2003 Domaine Joblot Givry 1er Cru Clos de la Servoisine - France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Givry 1er Cru
WIML91,WA90-92,NOWS

Tasted April 11, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Balloon Magnum glass. Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of marjoram, mixed berries and basil. Flavors of red berries and red cherries dominate. Seemed a little closed at the moment, as to be expected with such a young wine. Medium tannins, acidity and body. Decant at least an hour if serving now or hold at least another year before trying again. (91 pts.)

2003 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Bressandes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
WIML90,NOWA,NOWS

Tasted April 11, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Balloon Magnum glass. Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Subdued nose showing some notes of white pepper, anise and black berries. Ripe flavorfs of red cherries and red berries. Light to medium acidity, tannins and body. Maybe decant an hour to start or hold another year to perk it up a bit. (90 pts.)

2002 Bruno Clair Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
WIML90?,NOWA,NOWS

Tasted April 11, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Balloon Magnum glass. Dusty rose color in the glass, slightly dusty looking. Touch of leather on the nose with some dusty elements and dark brooding fruits underneath. Raspberries on the palate with a slightly bitter finish. Medium acidity, tannins and body. Needs more time in bottle to resolve in my opinion. (90 pts.)

2004 Roar Pinot Noir Garys' Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands
WIML91,WA94,NOWS

Tasted April 11, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Balloon Magnum glass. Light garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of cherries, white pepper and I thought I caught a whiff of bacon. Flavors of red berries and red cherries. Light to medium acidity, medium to firm tannins. Medium body. Not my style of wine but well made nonetheless. (91 pts.)
Sweet flight

2000 Stéphane Tissot Côtes du Jura Spirale Passerillé sur Paille - France, Jura, Côtes du Jura
WIML90,NOWA,NOWS

Tasted April 11, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Balloon Magnum glass. Light amber color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Huge nose of sorghum, honey and crushed golden raisins. Thick and unctuous on the palate with flavors of sorghum and honey dominating and once again those flavors of golden raisins. Medium acidity and body. Drink now. (90 pts.)
Many thanks to everybody that attended.

Joe
