I recently started acquiring wines in quantities greater than 1-2 months supply. I bought a simple, freestanding 9-case rack, which is adequate (for now...) except that I've already found myself with nearly two cases of bottles (mostly from smaller production Oregon PNs) that won't fit in my racking. Can anyone recommend racking (4-8 case) that's likely to hold my Thomas or Sinister Hand bottles (Prive may be too much to ask for... those bottles are ridiculous!)?

I'm primarily interested in freestanding shelving, but data points on instant-cellar type racking would be useful as well, given the rate that current space is filling up...

Good question. I'll be doing some research in the coming months on cheap, oversized racking for a cellar in my new home.

Do: Make at least 50% of the racks oversize to fit the larger Burgundy and Champagne bottles.

Do NOT: Make an "diamonds" or "squars" that you think you can stack severak bottles of anysize in them. They do not work!

Do: Devote space for boxes.

Fact: 99% of the pre-fab racks/cases/cabinets out there today will not hold the average Burgundy bottle.

Maybe more than you want to pay but I have this rack in my offsite storage room.

Swedish Shelving in Mahogany

It holds 126 bottles and does pretty well with the oversized bottles. It also doesn't have to be braced to the wall. The only ones that don't fit well are the really fat champagne bottles i.e. Krug and Taittinger Comtes. For those bottles that don't rack and/or stack I have them in wire bins which hold a little over a case and stack vertically.

Davetex says this unit was a bitch to assemble but it is structurally very strong. It had those English assembly instructions written by a native Chinese speaker.

I have one of those in natural finish, it holds most bottles. I think the Bordex racks will also accommodate large bottles, but those look like are real pain to assemble.

My Swedish shelving (in natural finish) arrived today. Half the shelves were in the black finish, so it's only half assembled. Seems reasonable, but I'll have to do alternate facing for most bottles that I'll have on it.

Fall may see a rebuilding of the current cellar location as a better insulated and smaller root and wine cellar. I'm thinking about building my own racks from scratch when that happens. We'll see.
