| Notes from a '80's wine dinner last month.
1988 Krug. Don't expect this wine to be ready for many years! It still has a tight nose of minerally citrus. The palate is full and ripe. Still straight forward but will ultimately be a classic!

| 96+ IWC; 96 Winetex points; $135+
Deep gold; Aromas of brioche, hazelnut and a hard to identify floral. A big mountain in the middle, still tight, but then a great finish. Still very acidic but simply stellar.
As Alohaj notes this one is still young although the bottle we had may have been further along than the one he tried.

| | I had this last night it was $190 on a wine list in DC which apparently is a steal if market value is north of $130. Anyway this puppy is still tight. I definetly got that brioche quality and there is still some significant acid (was worried about this until reading your post) on the mid pallete but fantastic stuff. Needs time quite, frankly still young. Great finish and went well with both the lobster my brother had and the tuna tartare I had. Alone this wine is a bit much but with food to take up some of the acid its awesome. 94+ points. | | "It's better to have your enemies inside the tent pissing out, then outside the tent pissing in." -- Lyndon Johnson | |

| | That's a steal of a price in a restaurant Fred. The cheapest I've ever seen this was about $110 when Krug was dumping it a little over a year ago. Mostly it sells for $150 and above. So a nice score there Fred. The 1988 Krug is pretty good isn't it. | | | |

| So, in order to be an 'official' member of the Champagne Slut Club, do you need to love $150+ bottles of Champagne, or rather, partake in them (semi-)regularly?
Oy, that is waaaay above my typical pricepoint. Yikes! | | www.roguefood.com -- www.cellartracker.com

| Great Champagne that is just starting to show the secondary fruit and bottle age elements. Rich and yeasty, we debated whether there is any Pinot Noir in the blend, I don't think there is, but with all the rich bread dough flavors, I can see where one could get that opinion. (skwid, winetex, any help on this, is there Pinot in the blend?) Very long finish. One of the most aromatic Champagnes I've ever had and almost the perfect amount and size of bubbles. Terrific tropical fruit notes (guava, passion fruit) are mixed in with the dough notes to create a lovely wine. Still, not as good as one or two other Champagnes I've had, but this is really special. 94 and my WOTN.

| Whiner - there is LOTS of PInot in the blend. It's hard to find the exact percentanges of the blend as I don't think Krug releases the info. You've also reminded me that we are down to only a couple of bottles of this champagne. | | | |

| | If you look hard enough you can find the blending percentages. I saw the other day that the percentages for the 1990 were 40% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay and 23% Pinot Muenier. | | | |

| Had this last night with my wife and a friend of mine who has fully recovered from lymphoma and his wife:
Very long finish, primary flavors of bread and some tropical fruits. Secondary flavor of some kind of spice (cinnamon?).
Only had one bottle of this, and it's worth seeking out again. 95 points. My friends wife is a champgne ho, and she thought it was the best bottle of champagne she ever had. I like the Winston Churchill Cuvee from Pol Roger a little more than this, but it's a fantastic wine none the less.

| - 1988 Krug Champagne Brut - France, Champagne (12/31/2005)
This bottle was challenging. It was definitely not corked but when opened had no aromas and little taste and a slightly metallic finish. After being open about an hour it started to come alive and at 1.5 hours it was singing. Maybe this bottle was slightly damaged? Or maybe just asleep. It wasn't up to the previous 88s that I've had so I go with the "slightly damaged" scenario. After it woke up it abused the 96 Bollinger Grand Annee opened with it. (94 pts.)

| 1988 Krug Champagne Brut - France, Champagne Atlanta Off-line with Ron Kramer (Bones Restaurant, Atlanta, GA): Deep, golden hue with near perfect mousse. Detailed, delicate, yet floral nose of toasty nuts and cream. Yeast, biscuits, hazelnuts and almond flavors yielding to vanilla and oak tightly wrapped in sharp, crisp, spry acidity that just explodes on the palate. A tremendous finish that just never quit. | This champagne is really all that. I thought this bottle was not quite as good as some previous ones but there has been bottle variation from my cellar(different sources...).
We opened this at Uchi here in Austin. The champagne with the food (sashimi and sushi) was stellar.

Can't add much to TNs for this wine but to describe last night's bottle. It started off tight but again opened up after the first glass. The last glasses with food were superb with a very long finish. (95 pts.)

| This was either the first or second vintage Krug I drank (the 1985 was the other), fantastic champagne. I thought it was expensive back then, looks cheap now.

Your lucky I hadn't started working at that point. Or else I may have had to take them all for myself. ;)
