| CENTRAL TEXAS OFFLINE IN AUSTIN, TX - Winetex's Home in Austin, TX (4/23/2006)
As a follow-up to the Central Texas Offline in Frederecksburg, TX Winetex was kind enough to invite us over to her home in Austin for another tasting on Sunday evening. Theme for the tasting was "Anything but USA". We ended up with an interesting, ecclectic mix of wines from around that world that were pretty well proportioned to the major wine producing regions of the world and virtually all were good to very good wines.
- N.V. Billecart-Salmon Champagne Brut Rosé - France, Champagne
~WA90-94,~WS80-90
Tasted April 23, 2006 at Winetexs’ home in Austin, TX. Opened and served immediately in a Champagne flute provided by Winetex. Salmon color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Muted and musty nose of mushrooms some yeast, cinnamon and strawberry. Must be mildly corked. Down the drain it went. No rating or recommendation. NR (flawed)
- 1995 Taittinger Champagne Brut Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne - France, Champagne, Côte des Blancs, Champagne
WIML95,WA96,~WS90-95
Tasted April 23, 2006 at Winetexs’ home in Austin, TX. Opened and served immediately in a Champagne flute provided by Winetex. Light yellow color in the glass, clear nose throughout. Nose of fresh yellow apple slices, pears and a touch of caramel. Flavors of crisp yellow apple, pear and citrus. Should drink well for 10 more years. Even at original release prices of close to $160.00-170.00 retail the value of this wine was acceptable at that time but at current retail prices such as Premier Cru’s price of $89.95 a bottle the value of this wine is simply outstanding and should be bought by the case at that price. (95 pts.)
- 2004 Feudi di San Gregorio Falanghina DOC - Italy, Campania, Falanghina DOC
WIML87-88,NOWA,NOWS
Tasted April 23, 2006 at Winetexs’ home in Austin, TX. Opened and served immediately in a Riedel (I believe) Cabernet glass provided by Winetex. Yellow to dark yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of lemon oil, flowers and a mix of diced tropical fruits. Flavors of lemon curd, pineapple, pear and peach. Drink in 2006, maybe 2007 if you lucky but why wait? Estimated price per bottle is $10.00 so at that price point the value is recommended. (87 pts.)
- 1997 Castello Romitorio Brunello di Montalcino Riserva - Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
WIML93,NOWA,WS95
Tasted April 23, 2006 at Winetexs’ home in Austin, TX. Opened and decanted then double decanted back into the bottle for serving about 30 minutes before serving in a Riedel (I believe) Cabernet glass provided by Winetex. Garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of crushed black cherries, smoke, plum and a little bit of a floral component. Nice, fruity flavors of red cherries, raspberry and red currants. This wine is still young in my opinion and needs at least two more years to really start showing its’ stuff. Even at an estimated price of $80.00-85.00 I’d still consider the value here to be agreeable. (93 pts.)
- 2000 Bodegas Emilio Moro Ribera del Duero Malleolus - Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
WIML90,WA88,WS90
Tasted April 23, 2006 at Winetexs’ home in Austin, TX. Opened and decanted then double decanted back into the bottle for serving about 30 minutes before serving in a Riedel (I believe) Cabernet glass provided by Winetex. Ruby color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of tobacco, smoke and anise. Flavors of pepper, bitters and Bing cherries. Drink over the next 3-4 years. If you can get a good price of around $40.00 a bottle on this wine then I’d say the value is agreeable. Much more than that I’d be cautious. (90 pts.)
- 2001 Finca Allende Rioja Calvario - Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
WIML93,WA95,WS92
Tasted April 23, 2006 at Winetexs’ home in Austin, TX. Opened and decanted then double decanted back into the bottle for serving about 30 minutes before serving in a Riedel (I believe) Cabernet glass provided by Winetex. Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of melted licorice, spice box. Black currants and some sandlewood. Flavors of black berries, licorice and chewy black currants. Previously rated at 91 and 92 points we’re upping this tasting to 93 points. At the $50.99 a bottle I paid for this upon release I consider the value to be recommended. (93 pts.)
- 2001 Celler Del Pont Priorat Lo Givot - Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
WIML91-92,WA95,NOWS
Tasted April 23, 2006 at Winetexs’ home in Austin, TX. Opened and decanted then double decanted back into the bottle for serving about 30 minutes before serving in a Riedel (I believe) Cabernet glass provided by Winetex. Dark and dusty red rose petal color in the glass. Almost “amarone” like nose of black licorice and pepper. Flavors of black cherries, white pepper, red berries and a dash of bitters. I’d wait another year before opening another bottle and decant an hour at that before tasting. This wine should last at least another 10 years in my opinion. I have no idea what pricing is on this bottle but based on the Wine Advovates estimate of $50.00 (never a really reliable source for pricing in my opinion) I’d say the value is acceptable. (91 pts.)
- 1998 La Petite Eglise - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
WIML88,NOWA,WS88
Tasted April 23, 2006 at Winetexs’ home in Austin, TX. Opened and decanted then double decanted back into the bottle for serving about 30 minutes before serving in a Riedel (I believe) Cabernet glass provided by Winetex. Plum color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of dill, red cherries and white pepper. Simplistic flavors of red cherry, bitters and just flat out a little flat on the palate. It must be shut down still. I’d recommend holding for two more years to see if she perks up a bit. If you can pick this up in the mid-20s per bottle then I’d say the value is acceptable at that price point. (88 pts.)
- 2000 Ca' Marcanda (Gaja) Magari Toscana IGT - Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
WIML93,WA93,WS90
Tasted April 23, 2006 at Winetexs’ home in Austin, TX. Opened and decanted then double decanted back into the bottle for serving about 30 minutes before serving in a Riedel (I believe) Cabernet glass provided by Winetex. Garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of plums slices, black currants, spice box and pepper. Flavors of red licorice, red currants and red cherries. I pleasant wine to drink I’ll hold my next to last bottle until 2008 to see how she evolves. Sticking with my previous rating of WIML93. Even at the pricey $57.00 a bottle I paid for this wine I still consider the value to be agreeable to recommended. (93 pts.)
- 2001 Azienda Bricco Rocche (Ceretto) Barolo Brunate - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
WIML93,NOWA,WS93
Tasted April 23, 2006 at Winetexs’ home in Austin, TX. Opened and decanted then double decanted back into the bottle for serving about 30 minutes before serving in a Riedel (I believe) Cabernet glass provided by Winetex. Plum color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of almonds, sherry and melted red licorice. Flavors of red cherries and red berries. Very primal right now but I see good and balanced tannins and acidity along with a promising nose that tells me this wine will hopefully develop into good to very good at some point way down the road. Personally I’d hold of tasting this again until about 2010 and go from there. WIML93 with room for improvement. If you can get this wine at the current low price of approximately $60.00 a bottle I’d gobble it up and consider the value at that price point to be highly recommended. (93 pts.)
- 2004 Two Hands Shiraz Lily's Garden - Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
WIML93,NOWA,WS94
Tasted April 23, 2006 at Winetexs’ home in Austin, TX. Opened and decanted then double decanted back into the bottle for serving about 30 minutes before serving in a Riedel (I believe) Cabernet glass provided by Winetex. Dark purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of roasted coffee, blueberries, smoke and mocha. Flavors of blueberry, black berries, mocha and black currants. Still pretty young I’d hold for two more years before opening again myself. At an estimated price per bottle close to $40.00 a bottle I’d say the value is definitely agreeable, perhaps recommended. (93 pts.)
- 2002 Shirvington Shiraz - Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
WIML94,WA99,NOWS
Tasted April 23, 2006 at Winetexs’ home in Austin, TX. Opened and decanted then double decanted back into the bottle for serving about 30 minutes before serving in a Riedel (I believe) Cabernet glass provided by Winetex. Crimson color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of black currants, chocolate, pepper flakes, expresso and some perfume quality like potpourri. Flavors of blueberries, roasted meat, black cherries and red licorice. Definitely a good to very good wine I currently can’t see the WA99 point rating. Most good Aussie Shiraz will age quite a while so perhaps there is some room for improvement here with more bottle age. If you were lucky enough to pick up this wine close to a release price of $50.00 a bottle then I’d say the value is recommended. Based on current pricing approaching of $150.00 and up I’d say the value would be unacceptable. (94 pts.)
- 2003 Domaine du Pégaü Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
WIML94,WA95-98,NOWS
Tasted April 23, 2006 at Winetexs’ home in Austin, TX. Opened and I believe splash decanted right before serving in a Riedel (I believe) Cabernet glass provided by Winetex. Dusty rose color in the glass. Tight nose giving way over the course of the rest of the evening some scorched earth, black cherries and black berries. Flavors are limited at the moment,, mostly red currants and sweet cherries. It was a crime to open this baby but I’m glad that babykiller Winetex did it and gave us a glimpse! I’ll be holding my first bottle until 2013 and expect to be amply rewarded at that time. Based on the price Winetex got me on this of $62.00 a bottle I’d say the value is currently between agreeable and recommended. (94 pts.)
- N.V. Oudinot Champagne Cuvée Brut - France, Champagne
WIML87,NOWA,~WS87
Tasted April 23, 2006 at Winetexs’ home in Austin, TX. Opened and served immediately in a Champagne flute provided by Winetex. Light yellow to yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of citrus fruits with just a splash of cream hiding in there. Flavors of citrus fruits, tangy apple and slightly sweet pears. Drink this as a house champagne now. Definitely a QPR hit in the $20.00-25.00 a bottle range I’d say at that price the value is more than acceptable. (87 pts.)
- 2003 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
WIML93+,WA89-93,WS97
Tasted April 23, 2006 at Winetexs’ home in Austin, TX. Served from 375mml bottle. Opened and served immediately in a sweet wine glass provided by Winetex. Yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of orange slices, apricots and maybe some nutmeg. Thick, unctuous flavors of orange marmalade, cream, apricot and honey. Another excellent wine from Lafaurie-Peyraguey, I’m going to rate this one just a hair behind the 2001 which I rated 94+. What a treat it’ll be to open the 2001 and 2003 side by side in 10-15 years. Considering you can still pick up this wine for under $40.00 a bottle per 750ml I’d say the value is highly recommended. (93 pts.)
Of course the last bottle of Champagne and the Sweet wine were consummed from the hot tub overlooking the beautiful hills of Lake Austin. It was an idyllic and relaxing way to wind down our wine filled weekend. Many thanks to Winetex for hosting us for a wonderful and relaxing evening.
