| I'm posting this because I've noticed it a couple of time the past 60 days...
Just a quick little note that the above-average (that's us, ain't it?) wine geek should know.
Sauternes is a sweet wine from France.
Sauterne is a crap wine from California's central valley.
If it is French it should be spelled with an "S" at the end. It is "silent" when pronounced.

You're back
I just checked and I guess It has taken me two months and almost a hundred posts to realize you were back .
It's like... when things are the way they are supposed to be no one notices. When something is wrong everyone notices.
So a belated "good to see you" from one of your favorite sparers

| | davidn -- your point is clear, well taken and apparently non-controversial among those in the know. I have yet to receive as clear and uncontroverted answer to my earlier queries about the proper pronounciation of "cockburn." | | | |

Hmmm? Is that a person's name.
Who knows the entimology of "cocktail"?
Give me the phonetics on "Worcestershire".
Other wine terms often mispronounced (we do this every three years too).

| Some musings on the origin of the word"cocktail"
As for Worcestershire, the dictionary says:wus -te-shur. But in Mass., Worcester is pronounced wus-tah, and quite often, as one long word: wus-tah-mass. | | Beta testing a new signature.

This one's a bit tricky. The correct pronunciation is "need her hour," as in "Here's a hundred bucks, I only need her for an hour."

no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no
Do you see an "H" anywhere in my name?
The "hour" is ok except it would be better as "our". The "ow" is harder than softer. But the "her" is wrong, wrong, wrong. No "H"!
Most people put an "H" in front of the "auer" so it comes out Knee der how er (Wrong)
Try: Knee der (like "derby" ow (like ouch) er (like her)

Since the etiology of this thread is picky spelling mistakes, I feel obliged to point out that "entimology" looks more like a misspelling of "entomology" (the study of insects) than it does of "etymology" (the study of word origins).
