A close friend of mine just took a vacation to France and brought me back 3 bottles of wine as I had asked. Like me, he doesnt know much about wine so I have some questions pertaining to the type and quality of the wine if anyone knows...

two read the following but are in different types of bottles with different labeles
2004
Domaine de Cruix
Beaujolais
Jean-Claude Brossette
are they both made from Gamay? He seemed to think one was different from the other.

The other bottle reads:
Chateau des Jacobins, Pomerol 1998
So, I am clueless as to which type of grape this wine is made from and the quality of the wine. Should I be saving this wine?
Any comments would help, sorry im clueless I have been trying to research more.

Whichever one of these that shows Beaujolais on the label is gamay. Is there any more info on the label of the wine that does not?

Chateau des Jacobins, Pomerol 1998

The primary grape for this wine should be merlot with the remainder made up of Cab Franc, Cab. Sauv or the both. 1998 was a good year for the right bank but I would say there is no need to lay this down. It may benefit it slightly, but maybe not. I have never tried it.

The second bottle is very thin and long, I have never seen a wine bottle like this in the stores. They both say "Beaujolais" on the label...

It reads;
2004
Domaine De Cruix
Beaujolais
Appellation Beaujolais Controlee
Mis En Bouteille Au Domaine
Cuvee Prestige
Vieilli En Fut De Chene
Jean-Claude Brossette

According to AOC rules this too would be gamay. Sounds like a riesling bottle, not sure why it would be bottled in that style. I would drink both of the Beaujolais near term.

Thank your friend for carrying 3 bottles of wine back from France. Drink the first 2 real soon. The 98 Pomerol can age a little longer but unless you have good storage, I would drink that soon as well.

Enjoy them. It's better that you don't know more about the wines.
