Hello,

I am interested in getting a level 1 Somm Cert for my future wine-career aspirations. I live in Denver, CO and would love to hear any suggestions you may have.

Thanks very much in advance!

Are you speaking of the Master Sommelier Program? Or another program?

David Glancy is the man to talk to.

This program is anything but easy! I'd bet there isn't a single person on this board that could pass the written part of the test. And all they do is throw foul balls at you while you are doing the serving test.

Welcome, Mary. I'm not a fan of sommelier(e)s, but best of luck to you.

Also, send a PM (one of the features of this site) to j_b (member of this site). He went through a similar program in NYC. He has a lot of knowledge about the topic.

At this point, I'm just interested in level 1 Somm, not quite ready for Master Somm. Maybe someday...

What I was trying to get at was are you planning on taking the intro for the MS or some other program? Their are no 1st or 2nd level Somms. in the MS program. You are either an MS, or you are just in the program.

If the Intro for the MS is the test you were planning on taking, focus your studies mainly on Bordeaux, Burgundy and Italy. Study other classical regions of France, as well as a general knowledge of Spain. You do not need to focus on much of the New World, just be generally familiar with CA winegrowing regions etc. Get yourself a copy of The Wine Atlas and The Oxford Comapanion to Wine. Also check out the MS site.

Looks like an interesting course.

Have never heard of it, but found a school near me. Maybe I might even look into it myself.

I'm not a fan of sommeliers either, but if Mary skips the Arrogance 101 class and learns well from the rest of the classes, she will be better than most.

Mary - PM sent regarding a Denver area group, one of who's members has also been seeking certification and can probably answer some of your questions.

Thank you to everyone who posted for all the great info.

I'm wanting to obtain the certification to pursue a wine career, but not as a sommelier.

Wish me luck!

Sorry it took me so long to respond...

I decided to go with the Court of Master Sommeliers. The remaining exams for '05 are full, so it looks like I have to wait until next year. I'm hoping they will have one in Napa again - take the exam and celebrate for a day or two or five!

Did you call Balzac Communications(the PR firm for the Court)? They keep adding classes, if you are just going off the schedule on the website they are not listed there.
