| Let's get this started again on the right foot...
If you have difficulty writing tasting notes, do not worry. Do not be shy. Do not think you are saying something stupid. Do not worry about assigning points. Do not worry about only assigning it points. Do not worry about your TN being completely contradictory to someone elses, even Jones (kidding dude!!) -- we're all individuals (I'm not) and we all have different tastes and likes and so on.
So, don't be shy!
Oh and by the way, Kudos to TBird recent rash of TN compositions!!! | | www.roguefood.com -- www.cellartracker.com

| Good job TJ.
Congrats to those putting up the TNs. I really appreciate the heads up on the Landmark Chardonnay. I would have missed that one. Thanks.

| So I did a quick look to see how many total TN section posts have ever been made here on Vinocellar and it is only a little over 37000 while Off Topic posts amount to over 70,000. That means we only post 5 tasting notes for every 10 Off Topic posts (52.4%)...

I agree -- there should be at least as many tasting notes as off-topic notes posted on VC. I hadn't realized the ratio was as skewed as you point out. Maybe we should more accurately refer to ourselves as an "Off-Topic Board" rather than a wine board until we can get our tasting note % up... Keep those tasting notes coming!

| I've been sort of in-and-out of tasting note mode of late, but you know what? There is absolutely nothing to it, and y'all should do more of it. It's easy to over-think TNs, to try to seek out descriptors, to ensure your language is "right", to make it somehow "complete", or maybe undisputable.
But what is a tasting note?
It's your impression of a wine, nothing more, nothing less, and it is valuable to all of us.
Don't over think it, just write what you think of the wine and post. Nuttin' to it - you'd do it in informal conversation over dinner, why not here?

That has helped me a lot, too, Ant.

I go one better. I keep all of my tasting notes in a journal on my laptop which is backed up regularly. In short, I don't trust any website to be here tomorrow. Period. | | Joe ----- Wine is like potato chips around me...if it's open, it's gone.

| I put mine in the Access data base. Keeps track of what I bought, where stored, and when consumed. Just in case i wish to buy some more. for some reason, my best selections seem to be the ones that I only bought one bottle of. Darn hard to locate a replacement. | | | |

| | I think we should all get back to posting some more TNs. I have been posting a lot more of these of late and it's kewl. We should all spend more time posting TNs. I can't tell you how kewl it is to get other suggestions for different wines that result from comments I make onTN threads. That CT wishlist tool is tres kewl! | | www.roguefood.com -- www.cellartracker.com | |

| My problem is not writing the damned things down. I open a bottle, decant if necessary and do all the usual swirling, snorting and slupring and then go:
"Oooh that's nice, this will go really well with a nice sit-down"
End of story. | | | |

This is a strange way to put this, I would have thought saying we post two Random Thoughs posts for every tasting note would have been more direct. Maybe TJ thinks in decimal. And, anyway, it is worse than 2 to 1, as a great many of the postings in the tasting note categories, aren't tasting notes.
I tend to post notes whenever I taste a particularly striking bottle which may be new or old., but the notes I appreciate the most are for new wines where it is possible to act (or refrain from acting) in the marketplace. | | http://www.sweetandsourspectator.org

| | TJ, thanks to your inspiration I have been trying to post more tasting notes. I would encourage everyone to do the same. They generally don't get read so there is not a lot of downside. | | | |
