| Three nights at the Wickaninnish Inn on the west coast of Vancouver Island.web page
Lafon Rochet and Miss Amy, Pinot and Pinto Envy, and my wife Patty and I.
Everyone brought some wonderful wines...and we ate some incredible meals, all prepared in the Envy's suite that was equipped with a kitchen(click on the Wick link above...click on luxury suites, then click on Chesterman Suite).
Night 1: *Smoked Salmon (hot smoked and lox) *Artisan cheeses (from Vanc. Island) *3 cheese tortellini (Patty pre-prepared this dish) *Fresh Crab *Fresh local Salad makings with Patty's Poppy seed dressing *Fresh local bread/bagette *Handmade chocolate (dark choc. bark with sea salt & cracked pepper...went great with the Port style dessert wine)
Night 2: *Cheeses/Bread/Smoked Salmon *Fresh Prawns *Huge Prime Rib of Beef that Lafon sniffed out in near by Tofino (Lafon and Pinot were concerned they may get jumped by hungry looking locals, most of whom have never seen that big of a hunk of meat before) *Rice *Veggie fry *Death by Chocolate cake that Lafon had specially made for her in Tofino...
Night 3: *Cheeses/Bread/Smoked Salmon *Fresh Prawns *2- 5lb. fresh Sockeye Salmon filleted and baked with Miss Amy's brown sugar and butter rub. *Rice *Salad *Left-over cake and chocolates
Now to the wines (in no particular order other than the order they were displayed on the fireplace mantle): -1998 Clos de Vouget Grand Cru Denis Mugneret -1992 Beringer Private Reserve -2003 Dr. Heyden Oppenheimer Sacktrager Auslese -1995 Nuit St Georges Les St Georges Denis Mugneret -1983 Gould Campbell Vintage Port -2001 Tandem Pinot Noir Keefer Ranch-Green Valley -2001 Lewis - Cuvee L -2001 Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Herrenweg de Turchkeim -1998 Trimbach Gewurz Vendanges Tardives -1998 Sumac Ridge 'Pipe' dessert wine -2002 Lewis - Alec's Blend -1995 Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Vieilles Vignes -1996 Pol Roger Rose -1990 Nuit St Georges Les St Georges Robert Chevillon -Schramsburg Blanc de Blanc -2000 Failla Jordan Keefer Ranch Pinot Noir -2002 Pommard Les Vignots Vincent Girardin -2001 Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Heinbourg -1996 Nuit St Georges Les Chaignots Robert Chevillon
You'll note a theme here...primarily Alsatian whites and Pinot Noirs/Burgundy's due to the amount of seafood we consumed.
What a weekend, we all had a blast!
We did a lot of hiking or just walking the beach to work off all the meals.
The Lafons and Envys are on their way back to Vancouver today to hook up with the Seaquams again before heading home tomorrow.
Thank you Lafon, Miss Amy, Pinot and Pinto...Patty and I really enjoyed your company.

No formal TN's were taken...we were having way too much fun socializing...but, I will attempt to make some comments from memory (as it were...). We had so many Nuit St Georges, I'm already getting them confused. I don't recall being disappointed with any of the Burg's...
-1998 Clos de Vouget Grand Cru Denis Mugneret -1992 Beringer Private Reserve *going stronger than I/we expected, but the fruit is fading. -2003 Dr. Heyden Oppenheimer Sacktrager Auslese *One of the BIG surprises for me...Pinot bought a bunch of these at around $14 ea., fabulous QPR and highly recommended. -1995 Nuit St Georges Les St Georges Denis Mugneret -1983 Gould Campbell Vintage Port *a good VPort that was just too hot. -2001 Tandem Pinot Noir Keefer Ranch-Green Valley *Disapointed in this one...disjointed, but then again, it could have been the company it was in (the other wines). -2001 Lewis - Cuvee L *a monster that needs lots of time. -2001 Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Herrenweg de Turchkeim *a great wine that we drank way too young...needs a few years at least. Was a great wine with time in the glass. -1998 Trimbach Gewurz Vendanges Tardives *a very nice gewurz, 90+ pts. -1998 Sumac Ridge 'Pipe' dessert wine *a wonderful B.C. dessert wine, very balanced and full. -2002 Lewis - Alec's Blend *see notes on the Cuvee L, another monster. -1995 Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Vieilles Vignes *DAMN!...one of my WOTW, outstanding! -1996 Pol Roger Rose *nice bubbly, again, drank too young. -1990 Nuit St Georges Les St Georges Robert Chevillon -Schramsburg Blanc de Blanc *another big surprise for me...great QPR bubbly. -2000 Failla Jordan Keefer Ranch Pinot Noir *very good. -2002 Pommard Les Vignots Vincent Girardin *good, but just didn't compare to some of the others. -2001 Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Heinbourg *Yikes...way too young/green, but will be a wonderful riesling in time. -1996 Nuit St Georges Les Chaignots Robert Chevillon *May have to wait until Pinot Envy to chime in...but I think this was the Burg that was the other WOTW wines for me...wonderful balance, finesse out the ying-yang.
Sorry for the vague notes budman...we all can't be futronic...

| | I don't think the fruit is fading at all on the 1992 Beringer Reserve. I suspect your bottle had less than perfect provenance. | | | |

You'll have to ask Pinot Envy...it was her bottle. PE has had a few of these, far more than I (I've had this once before 3-4 years ago), we did discuss this wine at the time, far be it from me to put words in her mouth...I will let her add her two-bits if she so wishes. I guess I was expecting a little more Fruit...The wine had a lot more phenolics than fruit happening.

| | We had this wine at the June, 2002 dinner, from a double mag, supplied by PE, and 4 single bottles. I have had the wine since and it's been outstanding. | | | |

| Tyee--
Sounds like you guys had a most excellent time. I'm secretly envious you guys had the chance to do such a serious amount of offlining in the time given. I particularly like the makeup of the wines you drank as per the seafood volume you guys consumed. You guys must have some seriously excellent seafood available out there. mmmmmmm-fishy. | | www.roguefood.com -- www.cellartracker.com

| I wish I could have been there-- great food, wine, and laughter in a beautiful setting sounds like a winning combination.
Regarding the '92 Beringer PR Cab, we last had a bottle of that in July (dinner in Seattle at the Met) where it showed extremely well, certainly not faded. Winetex and Red4Life might have some notes on it, but I thought it was outstanding. I guess at 12+ years a high-volume wine like is going to have bottle variation.

That just goes to show how great Tyee and Patty's seafood was. Also, at we opened the 2001 Tandem Keefer Pinot which after a night of burgundies seemed a little out of place. I still consider it one of my favorite wines.

| | I too have had the 92 Reserve on numerous occasions since the dinner at Willow and this bottle was most definitely flawed-- trace TCA, just enough to kill the fruit. | | | |

| | Now it is making sense, as the wine showed quite well just last month at an off-line in Boca. | | | |
