Board-O and I just came back from a wonderful tasting at a local wine shop in our area. The wines were supplied by a distributor called Michael Skurnik. Crackers, cheese, salami, and shrimp were served with the wines. I bought a bottle of the Henry's Drive Cab. Sauv Reserve 2000, and two bottles of the Lilly Pilly Noble Riesling 1999. The line up and my very brief notes:

Champagne Paul Drouet Special Reserve Alain Ducasse Brut $28.99
No notes taken

Domaine Weinbach Cuvee Theo Riesling 1999 $27.99
Harsh flavor, with weak acidic finish. 85 pts

Joel Gott Sauvignon Blac $16.99
I think Board-O said that this reminded him of locker-room sweat, he was right on. 84 pts

Gini Soave Salvarenza 2000 $28.99
Very light in color with a light citrus flavor. 82 pts

Robert Talbott Sleepy Hollow Chard. 1999 $44.99
Lots of oak on the nose but I didn't get enough of a pour to describe the taste but I gave it 90 pts

Domaine Weinbach Gewürztraminer Cuvee Lauence 2000 $57.99
Awesome nose of sweet honey. Very light but nice flavor. 93 pts for the nose 90 pts for the taste.

Mauro Molino Nebbiolo Langhe 2000 $15.99
Very light in color, looked like a Beaujolais. Nose of alcohol, very dry. 87 pts

Etude Pinot Noir 1999 $45.99 Board-O poured us this so we got a great pour.
First taste after 1 hour of being open. Very full and rich nose with some tobacco notes. Very tannic, got a burnt flavor on the finish. 90 pts. 2nd taste two hours being open. More fruit but still very young.

Sassetti Pertimalli Rosso di Montalcino 2000 $22.99
Nose reminds me of a French wine. 85 pts

Ciacci Piccolomini Ateo 1999 $29.99
No TN 85 pts

Azelia Barolo 1997 $60
Brownish, smokey color. Light in flavor with short finish 87 pts

Downing Family Cab. Sauv. 1998 $32.99
Dark in color. Wonderful cherry flavor. 88 pts

Henry's Drive Cab. Sauv Reserve 2001 $45.99 B-O gave us a huge pour. I went back for more 3 times.
Very dark in color. Great sweat nose of anise. Wonderful lengthy finish. 94 pts

Von Strasser Reserve Cab. 1999 $99.99 Another huge pour from B-O
Bo TN's but I remember that the nose reminded me if play-dough. 90 pts

Downing Family Zin 1999 $39.99
Nice typical zin with lots of cherry's. 91 pts

Biale Black Chicken Zin. 2001 $39.99
No TN's but gave it 90 pts

Cim De Porrera Priorat 1997 $44.99
Doesn't smell right to me. Shoe polish and mushrooms. Didn't finish my glass. 80 pts

Hazy Blur Shiraz 2000 $69.99 Another big pour from B-O
Wonderful nose, very silky and smooth on the palate. 92 pts

Lilly Pilly Noble Riesling 1999 $22.99
Beautiful golden color. Lots of sweet raisins. 92+ pts…We both went back four or more times.

Nieport Colheita 1984 $59.99
Very powerful nose. Reminded me of cognac. 20.5% alcohol but it taste higher. No score.

Trevor Jones Port AA 160 $19.99
18.5% alcohol but tasted higher no score.

Thanks again Board-O

What are you thanking me for? Your company made the evening for me. Thank-you.

TT and I were invited to a tasting tonight. Before I post the notes, let me preface mine with the statement that I don't feel my notes are entirely accurate. I'd call tonight kind of an off night for me. Most of the early wines seemed kind of bitter to me. I had roast chicken and broccoli rabe for dinner and I don't believe that contributed to the problem. I felt more confident in my opinions as the evening progressed. the wines, in order tasted, along with very brief notes:

1. Champagne Paul Drouet "Special Reserve Alain Ducasse" Brut- "plastic" taste, possibly an off bottle, not scored

2. Domaine Weinbach Cuvee Theo Riesling 1999- harsh, blah, 82 (I don't normally like dry Rieslings.)

3. Joel Gott Sauvignon Blanc- sweaty undershirt nose, very little fruit, uncomplicated, 84

4. Gini Soave "Salvarenza" 2000- medicine, 80

5. Robert Talbott "Sleepy Hollow" Chardonnay 1999- rich, oaky nose, slightly harsh, a little thin for a Talbott, 88

6. Domaine Weinbach Gewurtztraminer "Cuvee Lawrence" 2000- beautiful nose of honey and raisins, but the nose promised more than the wine delivered, lightly sweet, could use more fruit, 87

7. Mauro Molino Nebbiolo Langhe 2000- light red color, nice spicy nose, harsh, bland, 85

8. Etude Pinot Noir 1999- floral nose of cherries and vanilla, nice Pinot Noir flavor, but this wine needs more time, rated 2 hours after it was opened, 90

9. Sassetti Pertimalli Rosso di Montalcino 2000- slight odor of urine, light on fruit and flavor, 84

10. Ciacci Piccolomini Ateo 1999- nose of chocolate and licorice, bitter, 84

11. Azelia Barolo 1997- nose of plums, young, thin, 86

12. Downing Family Cabernet Sauvignon 1998- subdued nose, harsh, young, decent fruit, 87

13. Henry's Drive Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2001- lovely nose of oak, cedar, and spice, fruit and tannin to age, powerful, concentrated, 91

14. Von Strasser Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 1999- strange un cabernetlike nose, surprisingly ready, slight bite, 86

15. Downing Family Zinfandel 1999- moderate nose of spice and plums, shy on fruit for a young Zinfandel, sharp, but with some flavor, 86

16. Biale Black Chicken Zinfandel 2001- rich plummy nose, ripe berry flavors, not rich enough for a $40 Zinfandel, 90

17. Cims de Porrera Priorat 1997- hint of shoeploish on nose and palate, 84

18. Hazy Blur Shiraz 2000- plummy nose, smooth, but not concentrated enough, 88

19. Lilly Pilly Noble Riesling 1999 (Australia)- rich nose of botrytis and raisins, very sweet but with balancing acidity, flavorful, my WOTN, 93 (tt and I each ordered two of these.)

20. Nieport Colheita 1984- madeira-like nose, high alcohol (20.5%), tawny color, powerful, 92

21. Trevor Jones Port AA 160 (Australia- a tawny Portlike wine made from the Syrah/Shiraz grape)- tasted higher in alcohol than it actually was (18.5%), I've had many better tawnies, 88

ttepper & board-o:

Thanks for posting your notes. Sounds like a fun tasting.

A couple comments:

1) I totally agree with you that Biale Black Chicken is way overpriced. Had the 1999 last month and it was very middle-of-the-road. Maybe 87P at best.

2) I posted a TN on the Trevor Jones Tawny a couple months ago(TJ Tawny). I believe Parker gave this 98P. He really loves those Australian stickies!

Cheers,

Otis

otis, if that Trevor Jones had "AA 160" on the label, I cannot imagine it getting 98 points.

It is quite possible we are talking about different wines. I don't remember seeing AA160 on the bottle I tried. Whichever one I tasted had alot going on.

Have a good weekend,

Otis
