I know that I can sense 'off' bottles, you know -- cooked, corked, etc. But, I am not sure how one senses other things that could go wrong -- Brent Null's topic on corks someone suggested oxidization. And others have talked about madierazation.

Are there other terms, too?

How does one sense and detect these maladies of the cellar?

hazes, sediments, tartrate precipitation.....some people would consider all of these bottle defects, others wouldn't consider any of them to be.

refermentation in bottle is one I think everyone would agree on.

Spakerklers/Chamgagnes that lose their carbonation.....

I had a bottle of Hahn Meritage the other night which had a small piece of broken glass in it. I picked it out of my mouth thinking i got a barrel chunk.

VV-- Ugh, glass? The last time I was worried about glass in my drink was when I broke the lip of a beer in college and I strained the beer by holding my finger at the top of the bottle while I poured it into a glass.

Oy!

Glass!?!? Luckily you didn't swallow it, I'm sure that would NOT have been fun to "pass".

Yeah I saw where it came from too. Right at the top of the bottle, just where the opening transitions from the top to where it starts going inside. I think when the cork was being insterted during bottling, it chinked that piece off.
