| Big D! Episode 5: “steeeemoooor and haggis mix it up at Lola’s.”
That’s right folks. Both stemor and haggis blew into Big D! at the same time. They literally blew into town with the weather we’ve been having. So with such great wine lovers in our presence you have to get together to share a bottle, right? YOU BETCHA, PARTNER! Guess what happens when you put together a guy that grows trees and plants for a living with a guy that kills trees for a living? You get one fantastic evening of wine and lively conversation. And narey a word was spoken of killing trees. By the way, while you’re at it, be sure and toss in a bunch a bean counters to keep score. No comment on the lonely sale guy in the group.
So our venue for this wonderful offline was Lola’s in Dallas. For those that have never frequented Lola’s be sure and add it to your hit list while in Big D! You won’t find a better priced yet extensive wine list in the Dallas area. Plus the food and service are good to boot! Not to mention the fact we were allowed BYOB and were charged ZERO for corkage. You can’t beat that with a big ‘ol Texas stick (mesquite, of course). For the record in attendance were honored guests stemor and haggis plus a few DAWGS: Mr & Mrs preferred, Mr & Mrs WineDrinkerofTexas, PURPLE and yours truly.
Onto the show… Wines: 1998 Kumeu River Chardonnay Kumeu 1975 Benedict-Loosen-Erben Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer) 2001 Rochioli Chardonnay River Block 1988 Château Rabaud-Promis Sauternes 1986 Château Rabaud-Promis Sauternes 2000 Rochioli Pinot Noir Little Hill 2002 Loring Pinot Noir Santa Rita Hills Clos Pepe Vineyard 1995 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley The Montelena Estate 1995 Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Private Reserve 2001 Kracher Eiswein Cuvee
Notes: 1998 Kumeu River Chardonnay Kumeu Ordered from the wine list for $39.00. Opened and served immediately as a “palate primer” without decanting in restaurant stems. Clear, light yellow in color. Nose of pineapple and other tropical fruits. Flavors of lemon, butter, apples and pears. Nicely balanced and ready to drink.
1975 Benedict-Loosen-Erben Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer) Opened and served immediately in restaurant stems without decanting. Clear and light straw in color. Typical födel nose albeit very light for such an aged Riesling. Nose also gave way to some apricot and fresh cut flowers. Flavors of peach and apricot, soft and fruity. Mild tannins and acidity say “drink me baby, I’m ready”. Outstanding wine. My WOTN.
2001 Rochioli Chardonnay River Block Opened and served in restaurant stems without decanting. Clear light yellow in color. Nose of pears with a bit of clove like spice. Flavors of pears and soft yellow apple. Drink over the short term.
1988 Château Rabaud-Promis Sauternes Opened and served immediately in restaurant stems without decanting. Served with the Seared Fois Gras course, of course! Clear and appealing amber color. Beautiful nose that is dripping of honey, apricots and cloves. Flavors of apricot, spice, and mild citrus notes. Well balanced and a simply beautiful mouthfeel. Excellent wine that is ready to go. My number two wine of the night.
1986 Château Rabaud-Promis Sauternes Opened and served immediately in restaurant stems without decanting. Clear amber color in the glass. The nose is much more subdued than the 1988 at this point. Faint whiffs of apricots and pears on a floral background. Restrained flavors of pear, lemon and a little bit of honey. I don’t think this one is going anywhere at this point. Drink now. Or better yet, drink the 1988!
2000 Rochioli Pinot Noir Little Hill Opened and served immediately without decanting in restaurant stemware. Dark ruby to almost purple in the glass, clear as a bell. Nose of black berries, spice and red cherries. Flavors of sweet cherry, cherry tarts and just bit of white pepper like finish. Firm tannins still abound here with low to medium acidity. Try again in 2005 and judge for yourself.
2002 Loring Pinot Noir Santa Rita Hills Clos Pepe Vineyard Opened and served immediately in restaurant stems without decanting. Purple to dark purple in color yet clear throughout. Nose of licorice, plums, black cherries and other dark fruits. Flavors of bing cherries and plums over an earthy frame. Solid wine. Let it sit another year before trying again. 1995 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley The Montelena Estate Opened and served immediately in restaurant stems without decanting. Clear but solid purple color in the glass. Cedar, herbs and plums on the nose. Slightly backward fruits flavors of plum, black cherries with an hard to place earthiness on the finish. Let this one sit at least 2 more years before retasting to see if it rounds itself out somehow. No hurry on drinking this one.
1995 Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Private Reserve Opened and served immediately in restaurant stems without decanting. Clear, dark purple in color. Appealing nose of cedar, cherries and spice box. Flavors of black cherry, plums and red berries. Drinking better at this point in time than the 95 Chateau Montelena Estate it was paired with tonight. You can drink now but it should get slight better over the next 1-2 years and last at least 5-6 years after that.
2001 Kracher Eiswein Cuvee Opened and served immediately without decanting in Stoneleigh Hotel water glasses. Clear and light peach to amber color in the glass. Managed to coax some citrus aromas and flavors out of this light and youthful wine. Let’s let this one sit for a few years and see how it tastes in proper stemware. Enjoyed it though! Especially the company in which it was consumed. | | Joe ----- Wine is like potato chips around me...if it's open, it's gone.

| Joe
Thanks one more time for being the designated note and tasting Secretary for us DAWGS!
I totally agree on your WOTN and your number 2 choice! A big THANK YOU goes our to our guests who brought these wonderful wines. I also agree (as if you care! ) on the recommended lay down time of the Loring, Montelena and Beringer. They might have shown a little better if we could have decanted.
Well, I've recovered and am waiting for haggis to let me know if we're going to go a second round this weekend.

| Joe,
Nice notes and a great time. I've always enjoyed visiting Dallas ... now I've got even more reasons to look forward to my visits!
Lola was very good in all aspects, as you've described. The wines were very good, but the company was fantastic. It was great to FINALLY meet you DAWGs.
DaveMCI, I'm ready. Bring it on! | | Cheers, y'all
