Are all white chiantis called Trebbiano? I sure wish I had paid more attention in Italy.

I could be wrong but I'll take a stab...

I think the Chianti DOCG is just a red wine. In Chianti, however, producers can blend in small quantiies of wine from white grapes: either trebbiano or malvasia

Trebbiano is Trebbiano, but it is one of the allowed grapes in Chianti. Raybanz is correct in that the Chianti/Chianti Classico DOCG laws define it as a red wine.

The laws define the allowable grape varieties as follows:

Sangiovese, 75-100%
Canaiolo nero, up to 10%
Trebbiano toscano and/or Malvasia del Chianti, up to 10%
other local red varieties, up to 10%.

And see when we were in Tuscany they kept telling us that Chianti can be white or red, that it just means it's made in the Chianti region.

Thanks for the clarification. I know so little about non-CA wine.

Well, I guess you could have a vino di tavola from Chianti, but when post people talk Chianti, they're referring to the DOCG law.
