We've endlessly chatted about this wine but I couldn't find a formal TN.

  • 2003 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Four Barrel - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (4/3/2006)
Although this wine is very tight it is absolutely great Cali Pinot with lots of upside potential. We discussed when and if it has the possibility for 95 points and WOW wine status. If it happens it won't be anytime soon so we won't be opening another bottle for at least a year. There are certain wines that you are thrilled to have in your cellar. This is one of mine. [~$55 on release; Decanted one hour and needed it] (93 pts.)

Here is an earlier thread, but with only one post in it.

I agree that this one has the potential for greatness. Delicious and somewhere around 93 pts now, but could hit 95-97 pts 2-3 years down the road.

I had this a few times before and after it's release. It had deep, immense fruit but a few months after bottling it really closed down. I'm convinced this will age like a fine Burgundy and I opine that this shouldn't be touched until 2008-09 at the earliest. This is a sleeping giant.

Concur Testy....I've opened one so far, and I won't be opening another for at least another year. This is the most coveted wine in my cellar....and will be treated as such.

Sleeping Giant indeed.

I have these stored in the cellar way up high on the top row where I can't reach them without a ladder, which I locked up under lock and chain and threw away the key.

Unfortunately this bottle ended up too easy to get to. The rest are offsite so they will be safe. The nasty finish on this wine almost ruined it. The good news is that it was steadily improving in the decanter throughout the meal. My bad for popping this one.

For some reason this bottle was within easy opening reach and we decided to give it a go. This was not the best decision as it was an off showing for this wine. It had very complex aromas and flavors - dark fruit, asian spices, brown sugar, vanilla and on and on. The problem was a lack of balance in that the alcohol consumed the finish (the wine was at a cool serving temp.). 15.5% alcohol and every bit of it evident in this bottle. We decanted it about 25 minutes and it probably wasn't near enough. I recommend a longer decant if you are opening any of these now. Or just let them sleep as we will be doing with the remainder of our bottles. (91 pts.)

David I'm a bit taller than you are, let me know if you can't find the key for the ladder, I might be able to help.

Another non-memorable showing for this wine.

  • 2003 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir 4 Barrel - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (11/24/2006)
My scores are going down on this wine which is cause for concern. The brown sugar on the nose was almost overwhelming along with the candied flavors. And too much alcohol burned up the finish. Where is this wine going? Unknown... (90 pts.)

Shame on you, this needs at least 2 hr’s decant time.

That's the California price. $52 in Texas (before that tasting note, that is).

Hey Shannon, do you think we should have decanted this 2 hours? I was thinking 1 hour, 57 minutes and 47 seconds would have been sufficient.

Actually 1 hour, 57 minutes and 40 seconds would probably have done the trick.

    $50.00, Mailing List.

Ahh, nice pinot, very nice & like Jimmy said it is ready to go w/o problem. It is not going to blow one away, but a great little pinot with lots of red fruits. Enjoyed it much!

Rating: I am with Winetex, 91 points.
