| A definite first for me, here.
Presently drinking an '01 Marquis-Phillips Shiraz. A nice wine, pleasant bouquet with some interesting hints of caramel on the nose.
Here's my dilemma, initially on the palate, I don't care at all for this wine. Upon first taste, I get a salty, brine-like sensation which is very unappealing to me. On the mid palate and finish, it's a pleasant wine with the fruit starting to show after some time in the glass.
Anyone have any clue as to what I'm tasting here? I should note, I didn't decant this wine at all.

| | md-i understand where you are coming from. i found all the 2001 mp's to be slightly out of balance. after some time, they start to come together. time is needed. the shiraz was an aussie in you face fruit and oak bomb. a little one dimensional. for the price, a very good wine, but not a 93 pointer. also, a ton of this wine was made, so bottle variation is in order. | | | |

| I think ojeffso is correct on this. I have had bottles that have been great and others not so great. I have 8 bottles left of the Shiraz, 3 of the Sarah's, 4 of the #9 and 3 of the S2. I may just give every single one of those bottles a year to rest and hopefully improve. It could be that these wines will end up gaining weight like the '00 Shiraz. That wine is excellent right now. We shall see...

| | I have experieced significant bottle variation with the regular bottlings from MP. I have not consumed enough of the newer released mid level labels to see if these too have variation. One thing I can say about the Aussie wines, is if you are trying them shortly after release you may be drinking bottles in shock. Aussie wines have one heck of a journey getting to your retail shelf, so give them a month or so to settle. | | | |

| | So far in my four bottle experience the #9 has been very consistent. The 2001 and 2000 shiraz are consistent so far as well. I don't have experience with the other ones enough to say. Just one bottle of each. | | If you drink wine, you get smarter.... | |

Good call on that...and I actually thought about the bottle shock issue. You're right about the voyage over here. I'm going to wait for a while before I open another.
