Sometimes I'll double-click a category by mistake, say "Everything about Wine". If this happens, all the unread post information disappears. This will also happen if I only read one thread in a particular category. Is there a way to make the unread post information more "permanent"?

That behavior may be related to your browser or browser settings. For me, the unread post information is persistent even if I read parts of a forum at several different times spread over a day.

Mine disappear whenever I close down the web page just as rjs3 says. It is a real bummer when comcast has a bump (which is happening all too much recently).

If there is a setting somewhere in my web browser I would sure like to know about it.

The solution I would like is to have the "mark all as read" be applicaple to selected forum topics.
