A hacker is someone who up to no good, tryin' to make trouble in the neighborhood, if know what I mean.

Spiders are automated "agents" - programs developed to search the web for specific information. They "crawl through the web" - I suppose this is how they got their name.

Rev, are you using Webtrends?

That's what I thought. Who would hack a wine site? Odd Target.

Spiders also log information for the search sites.

Rev - this is really cool information! Thanks for sharing. Now don't go publishing how many times a day I hit the site.

Two things:

Hackers just like to "add another notch to their hacked sites belt" so they will attack anything.

The "attack" was from a M$ windows computer with some sort of virus. I see these all the time on my server. These virii made to exploit M$ IIS servers (which vinocellar is running). If you aren't running a Micro$oft server then you have no problem.

skwid, Microsoft dosen't have the only operating system vulnerable to hackers. Linux's "Apache" product has a number of holes as well. Even just the RFC for SNMP for example has a ton of holes.... that RFC is used in making most all Operating Systems.

Basically, these hackers are trying to get admin access to my server. Then once they have it, they run an FTP client and upload illegal files for other people to download. This uses my bandwidth and not the hackers. That's the most common thing they do. The second most common, is they run a program in the background that listens for commands from the hacker that he may issue at a later date. When the command is initiated, and the 100's of computers that the hacker has infiltrated hear the command... they all respond at once and can effectively "bomb" a site with hits, using up all the bandwidth, disabling regular users from getting to that site. It's a "denial of service" attack. There are many many others... but mostly they just want control of your computer to gain access to data stored on it, or gain access to the available Internet bandwidth of the PC.

While apache does have holes in it the accesses you show are specifically targetted at IIS. I've yet to see a virii launched from clients which is specific to apache.

Rev,

I'm curious -- is there a rank of which members have visited most often? I visit several times a day but I don't post too often. I'm just curious to see where my 'thirst' for knowledge ranks (pardon the pun)!

skwid, I'm not going to debate with you which is better than what. I mearly was pointing out that no matter what the system, it has it's holes. In the end, it's a combined strategy of securing your operating system, along with secure programming, and a good firewall, is what it takes to keep a system safe, no matter what it is.

Kimber, while I do log everything that comes in and out, I don't necessarily know what IP address is who. (not yet)

That'd be a neat thing to see though. The moderators of this site might be on top. That's a good thing right?

I like kimber's idea. There is a way to track # of posts, is there also a way to track number of times a user has logged in? Or how many threads they have viewed?

So, under what criteria would we pop up on google? I tried wine and vino to no avail. Perhaps "wine forum"??

just curious
