| This is worse than the previous Search. There is still no way to categorize results. Below is an example of a functional search from the Wine Spectator boards here are the "Advanced Search" fields:
This is what we need to be able to do if you need to tell your developer. Google search is NOT it. The previous forum software did this exactly.

| Right now, the forum search can do the following: - Choose Search Words
- Search ALL Keywords
- Search for ANY of the Keywords
- Search for EXACT MATCH of the keywords
- Choose which forum you want to search
- All Forums can be chosen
- Individual Forums can be chosen
- Selection of Forums can be chosen
- Post Timeline to Search
- Choose to search ALL Posts
- Choose to search only past 12 hours
- Choose to search only past 24 hours
- Choose to search only past 3 days, 5 days, 10, 15, 30,45,60,90,120,240,365 days
- Choose to search by User
So in looking at the above... This forum is missing, in my estimation: Choose to search Subject and Messages OR Subjects ONLY - ORDERY BY: Date Posted or "Relevance"
Is that a fair and accurate account of the difference? And if you were to choose the "default" of every search you did, would it be the following? (please make suggestion if not) Defaults: Search ALL Posts Search ALL Forums Search for EXACT MATCH Search SUBJECT ONLY ORDER BY DATE (MOST RECENT FIRST) | | | If you drink wine, you get smarter....

| I realized that I forget about the drop-down menu because I use the simple search feature. Extra clicks being the issue there. So in looking at the above... This forum is missing, in my estimation:
Choose to search Subject and Messages OR Subjects ONLY
- ORDERY BY: Date Posted or "Relevance"
Is that a fair and accurate account of the difference? YES, but here's one of the problems. After a search is complete you get a number of pages of results. If you go to page 5 for example and then try to go to page 2 of results you can't do it. It scrambles the search and you have to start all over. Maybe increase the number of results shown on one page to 100-150.
Also a note on the new editor - for the most part it works pretty well except for the "Paste" function. Why does it bring up a separate box to insert text? Again more clicks. I use keyboard commands instead of mouse clicks for most things and this is slower. This is a nit that probably doesn't apply to most people.

| Posted By Winetex on 02/17/2008 10:59 AM This is worse than the previous Search. There is still no way to categorize results. I'm saying this kindly of course, but want to make a point: The "previous" search on the Wine Search tab was also Google search, but it showed results from 80+ sites... where now it only shows results from VinoCellar.
Further, on clicking on a result, it used to pop up in a NEW WINDOW, which it doesn't anymore.
So I am assuming the previous search you are talking about is different, and not the one that was on this page before.... because certainly it is "better" and not "worse" based on the two facts I described. Also, my observations of the Google search are that it works pretty well, Though this is certainly just my opinion. Search on just "Bressler" and you get GREAT results in my opinion. It immediately shows the subjects of posts first (just once for a particular topic) and I instantly see all the years bressler has made wines, all on the first page. Not bad in my opinion. So I'm going to leave this Wine Search tab there.... for those who like the google style.... I will also keep communicating with the developer to keep enhancing the forum specific search, using your comments and suggestions, which are definitely most appreciated!! | | | If you drink wine, you get smarter....

Hmm.. not sure I'm following. Is it because when you go to Page 5, you don't see Page 2 anymore in the little "Pager" control at the bottom? So it seems you have to click the "Go to first page" double arrows << and then go back to page 2 ?
Every time I hit a particular page, the results on that page are exactly the same....

With IE7, ctrl + v works... are you using Firefox? What version? (if you are using firefox and it doesn't work, I'll ask the editor developer why... he's very responsive) | | | If you drink wine, you get smarter....

(if you are using firefox and it doesn't work, I'll ask the editor
developer why... he's very responsive) Firefox 5.0. I just tried IE and it worked fine. blah. Strange. Still playing with Forum Specific Search so I can give you more clear feedback.

| Ok.. regarding the cut/copy/paste... this is a Firefox security decision they made to not allow it... unless you specifically change the security of the browser. So unfortunately, there is nothing at all I or the developer can do to get around the issue... (pasting into an "active" editor control like this one. Pasting into a textbox which isn't "active" is not considered a security threat, so they allow it) | | | If you drink wine, you get smarter.... | |

| I'm fairly new here, but one thing that annoys me about the Search function here is this: When I do a search and then click on one of the results ... no problem. But if I want to go back (via the Back button) to the list and see the results again, they are gone and I must type in the search parameters again. I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.12

I want to have a real search engine, that displays results with some kind of logical order. I'll enter something and get a bunch of posts from 2003 that are barely, if at all, relevant.
Also, I am so freaking tired of losing posts. Number one offender - if I am typing a response to a post and someone else posts to the thread before I finish... my post is lost. Drives me batty. Search should work. You should be able to use standard search grammatical structure (example Turley not Martinelli... or maybe +peay +pinot). It should obviously default to most relevant posts first, but the most relevant posts thant share the same level of relevancy should be displayed in most recently posted date order and work backwards. In the interest of telling you everything I would like to search on, here's more things I would like to make sure are included (some of which may already be working on the VC search version) -- Tell the search which forums to search (or all of them)
Give me a choice to list results most recent first Give me a choice to list results most relevant first
Give me a choice to list results with most relevancy, but also in most recent when considering most relevant Let me specify the exact date range I want to search (or also give me period options (last month, last week, last year) Let me specify if I want the search to search just thread/post titles or all post contents
Let me specify if I want to see results as individuals posts or as threads/topics Let me specify the sort on the results I want (last posting date, number of replies, poster name, forum name, etc) Let me search for posts of ONLY a specified user, ideally by forum section (I am thinking Tasting Notes, here). I hope this helps!

| Posted By Bob Bressler on 02/16/2008 5:53 PM I think that Cellar Tracker has taken off some of the pressure for a tasting notes DB Might be nice to have a customizable front page with just the forums you choose Bob told me he was using CellarTracker to search tasting notes. I had used it once in a while but now it is the first place I look. You get notes of many of the people from here plus a whole lot more. I assume that one doesn't have to be a "member" to look up notes but one probably needs to set up an account to post notes. I'll bet Eric would be willing to set up some sort of co-op deal with VinoCellar. I know he would want to charge individuals something (Lord knows he needs the cash-flow) but his website is the best value for very little money on the entire web.
If you haven't seen the site check it out.
