As many know, I've gotten the "Wine links" feature of VinoCellar working pretty well now.  I still have maybe one or two nights work to do on it, but then I'll be done with it for now, unless more suggestions pop-up down the road.  Since the 'core' of it is done, enhancements are easy and don't take long.

So with that in mind, I'm already thinking about what I should work on next.... hence, the reason for this poll.  There are some obvious choices I'll put in the poll, but other suggestions are completely welcomed... now that I've finally proven to you (I hope) that I can actually do it.

Any input is appreciated...  these features will be for YOU guys...  the people who use vinocellar and make it their online wine home.

ya... that one is tough.... I'm still peppering the forum programmer with that one.. He's working on a new version for release within a month or two. So I'm waiting on that.

So this thread is for what I CAN work on.... and do myself at the moment.

That is, far and away, the biggest most imporatnat thing you can do to improve the site.

The stuff you "can't" do...
Yes; search is very important
but...
I still want a "reliable" jump to last read post.

If you don't use the "Mark all Read" button, jump to last read post works reliably....   (yes, that means the "Mark All Read" button needs to be fixed, but in the meantime.....  don't use it if you want it to work).

To be clear... Eric, and Poolboy... about search.....

Please explain exactly what the improvements need to be so I can communicate it clearly to the forum developer. Thanks!

I want to have a real search engine, that displays results with some kind of logical order. I'll enter something and get a bunch of posts from 2003 that are barely, if at all, relevant.

Also, I am so freaking tired of losing posts. Number one offender - if I am typing a response to a post and someone else posts to the thread before I finish... my post is lost. Drives me batty.

What logical order would you be looking for? Sort by "Most Recent First" and then what else? Telling me what's wrong is helpful... telling me what you think would fix it or make it better or make it usable, is the most helpful. Thanks!

regarding losing posts... yes... it's an issue... that does not happen in the full reply. I suggested removing the quick reply (the only part that has a problem with losing posts) but winetex didn't want me to)

As a software developer, I am curious why the two editors would submit their contents to the server differently. I also find it to be a poor sign that this bug is present at all, as it hints at some fundamental misunderstandings in handling concurrency.

Brad, just realized my post sounded more aggressive than intended; overall, the software works at the 85% mark and it's going to be a lot of little things from there. I use the quick post frequently, and love the feature, but I've found that I need to type a response right away if I use the quick reply... or I lose it. Took about 7 or 8 missed posts before I figured out what was going wrong.

I guess the best comparison I can give is compare Live search to Google search, in terms of results accuracy and relevancy. You've got Live search running here :-D Sadly, I'm not sure how you fix it... I would prefer to have it sorted by relevancy vs. most recent, but the here's where it gets interesting - I'd much rather have the latest TN (i.e. most recent) or last part of a thread vs. 20 instances of the same thread with only one post that deals directly with my search query.

Hope that helps more :-D

Me too...   I'd think they'd both use the same process....  but, I still haven't heard of anyone losing a post in the full reply editor.

Yea, everyone probably sounds more aggressive than they mean too..  but I know some things are frustrating, so I pass over the angst (I didn't used to, which was why I disappeared from VC for weeks at a time) and now I try to just take the useful content of a post.   But again, some people just say "this sucks" or "That sucks" or whatever, and don't ever say what the real issue is, or what would make it better.  So hopefully no one's offended when I ignore those types of posts, as they aren't helpful at all.

So yes, your last post helps more...  and don't worry about the first... I looked through your frustration...  I'm feeling the same frustration too.

When I edit a post, it returns me back to the first rather than most recent post.

When searching, most recent first is probably more useful.

Where Are They: used to show what threads members were viewing, rather than just Wine Forums.

Thanks!

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is...

I think that Cellar Tracker has taken off some of the pressure for a tasting notes DB

Might be nice to have a customizable front page with just the forums you choose

This place is a ghost town compared to the way it used to be.

Don't waste your time trying to do search, Google has you beat hands down.
All you need to do is to prefix your search with
site: vinocellar.com

There's probably a clever way to invoke that from within the site.

I think it may be less trafficked because search does not work well. Until it does, it is too hard to find topics of interest unless you camp out on the site.

Ok.. .well I think I did it... check out the WINE SEARCH tab... and do a search...

It's a GOOGLE SEARCH.... that ONLY SEARCHES VINOCELLAR....

And it SEEMS TO USE THE SAME WINDOW... (doesn't open a new one) when you click on a result.

This does seem to be the best search I can do for Vinocellar... and would replace all other search links... (I would remove them if this works)

Please test it out, and let me know how it goes!!! Thanks!!

Exactly where is that? I can't seem to find this to try it out.
