VINOCELLAR.COM 4TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION - Wineries and John Ash Restaurant, Santa Rosa, CA (2/18/2007)

Tasting at Siduri Winery, Santa Rosa with Adam Lee
  • 2005 Siduri Pinot Noir Willamette Valley - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Tasted at the winery as part of the VinoCellar.com 4th Annual Celebration. Clear ruby in color; a medium-bodied Pinot with an underlying earthy note and cherry flavors. Average well-priced Pinot. $19.50 from the winery. (87 pts.)
  • 2005 Siduri Pinot Noir Muirfield Vineyard - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Tasted at the winery as part of the VinoCellar.com 4th Annual Celebration. My notes are virtually identical to the 05 Siduri Willamette Valley PN - Clear ruby in color; a medium-bodied Pinot with an underlying earthy note and cherry flavors. This Pinot had more of everything - complexity, structure, aromas and flavors. Some people in our group didn't care for the earthy quality in the two Oregon wines but I liked them. $39 from the winery. (89 pts.)
  • 2005 Siduri Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands
Tasted at the winery as part of the VinoCellar.com 4th Annual Celebration. Solid Pinot Noir but with no distinct characteristics. $29 from the winery. (87 pts.)
  • 2005 Siduri Pinot Noir Cargasacchi Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Rita Hills
Tasted at the winery as part of the VinoCellar.com 4th Annual Celebration. Notes from memory (!): For some reason I find bottlings from this vineyard very appealing. There is an earthy, brambly note that I think adds to the complexity. This wine had that and was drinking very well abeit very young. I would buy this one. Good. $53 from the winery. (90 pts.)
  • 2005 Siduri Pinot Noir Clos Pepe Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Rita Hills
Tasted at the winery as part of the VinoCellar.com 4th Annual Celebration. Notes from memory (!): Young and tannic and disjointed. Needs time to find itself. No score. $53 from the winery.
  • 2003 Siduri Pinot Noir Amber Rose - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Rita Hills
Tasted at the winery as part of the VinoCellar.com 4th Annual Celebration. Notes from memory (!): Very dark in color. It had an aromatic nose of spicy cherries and cola. Integrated and drinking well. Stylistically a bit darker than I care for in Pinot. (89 pts.)

Tasting at Arista Winery, Sonoma
A beautiful property high on the hill.
  • 2006 Arista Winery Gewürztraminer - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Tasted at the winery as part of the VinoCellar.com 4th Annual Celebration. Almost colorless with a floral nose and crisp acidity. Tasted more like Sauv than Gerwurtz. Quite pleasant. (86 pts.)
  • 2005 Arista Winery Pinot Noir Longbow - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Tasted at the winery as part of the VinoCellar.com 4th Annual Celebration. Clear dark garnet; A blend of vineyards; Well-made, balanced Pinot but very young. Should improve. 14.3% alcohol. (87 pts.)
  • 2004 Arista Winery Pinot Noir Ferrington Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Tasted at the winery as part of the VinoCellar.com 4th Annual Celebration. More earthy than the other Pinots tasted. The winemaker indicated that he thought the sweet spot for drinking this wine was 5-7 years post vintage. Somewhat more classic Pinot style. (88 pts.)
  • 2005 Arista Winery Pinot Noir Toboni Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Tasted at the winery as part of the VinoCellar.com 4th Annual Celebration. Clear medium garnet in color; Lots of spice (nutmeg) on the nose and throughout the palate. Balanced with some integration that should come with short term aging. Nice wine, liked the style. 14.3% alcohol. (89 pts.)
  • 2005 Arista Winery Pinot Noir Mononi vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Tasted at the winery as part of the VinoCellar.com 4th Annual Celebration. Shy nose with spice, cherry and raspberry aromas and flavors. Acidic on the finish. Liked the style, might buy this. 14.3% alcohol. (88 pts.)

Dinner at John Ash Restaurant
The final night of a great weekend of wine tasting, wine dinners and general fun. My notes were pitiful by this time and I only managed to taste about half of the wines below.

The final list of wines: 1999 Louis Roederer Cristal Champagne; NV Bollinger Special Cuvee Champagne; 1989 Charles Ellner Brut Champagne; 2004 Aubert Chardonnay, Ritchie Vineyard MAGNUM; 1992 Dominus MAGNUM; 1964 Borgogno Barolo Riserva; 1984 Swan Zinfandel; 2004 Pride Merlot, Mountaintop Vineyard, Vintner’s Select; NV Domaine des Duex Mondes Deux C (Viognier from Clendenon & Cuilleron); 2003 Donhoff Riesling Spatlese Norheimer Kirshheck; 2005 Freeman Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast; 2005 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley; 2005 Freeman Pinot Noir, Akiko’s Cuvee; 2005 August West Syrah, Rosella’s Vineyard; 2003 Behrens & Hitchcock Petite Sirah; 2004 Gary Farrell Charonnay, Russian River Selection; 2004 Gary Farrell Charonnay, Westside Farms; 2003 Quilceda Creek Merlot; 2002 Sine Qua Non Whisperin’ E White; 2002 Sine Qua Non Hollerin’ M Pinot Noir; 2001 Sine Qua Non Syrah, Midnight Oil; 2004 Alesia Pinot Noir, Kanzler Vineyard; 2003 Scherrer Pinot Noir, Fort Ross High Slopes; 2005 Moshin Pinot Noir, Molinari Vineyard; 2004 Moshin Petite Sirah; 2002 Tantarra Pinot Noir, Evelyn Vineyard; 2005 Tantarra Pinot Noir, Evelyn Vineyard; 1999 Dehlinger Pinot Noir, ‘Octagon’; 1998 Chateau d’Yquem Sauternes
  • 1999 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut - France, Champagne
Tasted at the John Ash Restaurant as part of the VinoCellar.com 4th Annual Celebration. 93+; This bottle may have been slightly better than the previous one. Just a lovely drink with fresh apples, toast and a refined mousse and style. As someone noted they let a glass sit there for a few minutes and it was excellent when he returned to it so maybe there was improvement in the glass. (93 pts.)
  • 1989 Charles Ellner Champagne Brut - France, Champagne
Tasted at the John Ash Restaurant as part of the VinoCellar.com 4th Annual Celebration. This champagne was slightly oxidized with mushrooms and hazelnuts on the nose. Very toasty with a slight metallic taste on the finish. Nicely aged vintage bubbly but it's probably time to drink up on these. (90 pts.)
  • 2004 Aubert Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
Tasted at the John Ash Restaurant as part of the VinoCellar.com 4th Annual Celebration. From magnum and what a happy place to go to. Light gold with a slightly green cast; all I wrote was "pretty darn good" in a highly technical tasting note. (94 pts.)
  • 1964 Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barolo Riserva - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Tasted at the John Ash Restaurant as part of the VinoCellar.com 4th Annual Celebration. Slightly cloudy garnet in color; an original release fom Borgogno. Very medium weight; there was some very faint raspberry fruit along with a toasted cherry character and a bit of mushroom in the middle. Spicy finish. Served with a ravioli and mushroom sauce which completely enhanced the wine. (92 pts.)
  • 2003 Quilceda Creek Merlot - USA, Washington
Tasted at the John Ash Restaurant in Sonoma, CA as part of the VinoCellar.com 4th Annual Celebration. Nothing like the previous bottle. Very one-dimensional and clumsy with little flavor integration. ouch. (89 pts.)
  • 1992 Dominus Estate - USA, California, Napa Valley
Tasted at the John Ash Restaurant in Sonoma, CA as part of the VinoCellar.com 4th Annual Celebration. From magnum; Dark purple in color with a spicy nose and very mellow mineral and blackberry flavors throughout. Definitely secondary aromas and flavors but seemed a bit closed. A great match with a big juicy steak. If I owned these I would probably start drinking them. (91 pts.)
  • 1984 Joseph Swan Zinfandel - USA, California, Sonoma County
Tasted at the John Ash Restaurant in Sonoma, CA as part of the VinoCellar.com 4th Annual Celebration. For my tastes this wine was completely over. It really had nothing going on but wasn't bad. (75 pts.)
  • 2001 Sine Qua Non Midnight Oil - USA, California, Central Coast
Tasted at the John Ash Restaurant in Sonoma, CA as part of the VinoCellar.com 4th Annual Celebration. I think by this point in the weekend palate fatigue set in with a vengeance. While a good wine I found it heavy on the palate without much nuance. (90 pts.)
  • 2003 Behrens & Hitchcock Petite Sirah - USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District
Tasted at the John Ash Restaurant in Sonoma, CA as part of the VinoCellar.com 4th Annual Celebration. All I remember about this wine was its velvety texture and big tannins. Probably needs some time to tame the tannins. (90 pts.)
  • 1998 Château d'Yquem - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Tasted at the John Ash Restaurant in Sonoma, CA as part of the VinoCellar.com 4th Annual Celebration. Before dessert (very chocolate, don't try it...) we started in on this lovely wine. Completely accessible now but still very primary. My only note was "love it". (93 pts.)

And a great time was had by all. Thanks to Chris P for all of his hard work to make the weekend go off without a hitch (the power outage was out of his control...;).

Until next time friends.

Pete, I thought the Octagon was drinking great, certainly still has years in front of it, but no crime to open now.

Thanks Eric.  I need to get to the offsite soon and I'll bring some back.
