Anyone going to the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January? I'm going to be there 1/5 - 1/7. Mix a little business with pleasure?

David -

That would be A)..........

I knew that you would have gone before. This and the computer show Comdex are not as painful as they once were. The shows are, but now I'm not the FNG who has booth duty. Now I'm the guy that flies in the afternoon, checks in to his hotel, grabs a great dinner with a customer and plays a little blackjack. Next day, 2-3 meetings after noon and then another dinner. Fly back after only 2 nights and very little time on the convention floor. But I am also kind of a home theater geek, so I like walking around and seeing the cool new TVs.

I figured someone on this board had a job that would take them to this event. After all, it is a Las Vegas boondogle!

Yup, me too. At least CES was not as crowded as it was during Comdex in November. Vegas is definitely better than it used to be.

CWG - enjoy your boondoggle!

I hate booth duty. I am trying to avoid the CTIA next year like the plague.

I used to love booth duty when I was at my last two jobs.
It was hard work but great fun. Got to go to CeBIT in Hannover one time.

These days the nearest I get is being chief geek on one of the
company's main internal events and trying to sneak into Java One.

Am I really going to be the only wine geek from this board that's gonna be in Vegas for CES???

It is rarely fun to drink alone.....but it can be done.

I did booth duty once at COMDEX in exchange for airfare and hotel (and only had to work 4 hour days . Best yet, I got the Air Force to give me permissive TDY because it was related to my career field (with the understanding that I would actually attend seminars and learn something).

One more bump....

No one is going to be there???

I guess I'll be the guy drinking a 2002 Pride Mountain Merlot out of a Riedel at the blackjack table.....

Who are your major suppliers?
Do you have any appointments?
What do you think will be the most interesting product at the show?

I work for Tripp Lite as a EVP of sales. I am going for meetings with Dell and Crestron. And for blackjack and an over the top dinner. My expectations for the show are pretty low. Lots of HD Plasma...

Sony says they are getting out of the Plasma business. Putting a pact together with a couple of other companies to make LCD screens. They believe the future is in DLP and LCD. I think they are right.

I may be wrong but LCD with DLP does make a difference to me visually. I like the products I've seen so far.

Another (amazing) fact about the difference between LCD and Plasma:

Plasma uses 10x the electricity that LCD uses.

10x is a lot! It is the difference between 100 watts and 1,000 watts.

Sony is not getting out of the Plasma TV business. This is a rumor. The fact is that Sony doesn’t make Plasma’s; they are outsourced from other manufactures and they will continue to do that as long as there is a market. They do make there own LCD’s. It is very expensive to make both of these technologies. Another example is Pioneer, they make their own Plasma’s with their Elite sets being probably the best Plasma’s out there. They are not in the LCD business because they don’t have that capability. Currently, Pioneer would have to outsource LCD’s if they wanted to be in that business. Clearly, the future is LCD.
