| Ferry Plaza Wine Merchants
Greetings: Join us Wednesday, September 5th, from 4:30-7:30pm, when we welcome Steve Pride, Stuart Bryan and his daughter, Elizabeth of Pride Mountain Vineyards to our Wine Bar.
It is Pride family night at Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant. Carolyn Pride is
the matriarch of this historic Napa Valley wine family, Steve is her
son and Stuart is her son-in-law. Agriculture is in the Pride family's
blood. The Prides purchased the historic Summit Ranch in 1989 and its
subsequent development into a world class winery was the culmination of
a lifetime of farming for Carolyn and her husband, Jim, who passed away
in 2004 after a long battle with cancer. Jim Pride would say,
"Participate in quality." Quality has been the hallmark of this
landmark winery on top of Spring Mountain on the boundary of Napa
and Sonoma Counties. It's a long and winding road up Spring Mountain,
and the Prides have always made sure it was worth the trip once you
arrive. The views are spectacular, the setting is sublime, the facility
is top notch, the wines are terrific, but it is the genuine warmth and
friendliness you feel as you walk through the door that sets them
apart. Everyone there seems happy to see you, perhaps still surprised
that people make the journey up the switchbacks of the road below. The
friendly folks don't act like employees, it feels more like you are
visiting one big, happy family, and they have wine bottles open to
boot!
Bob Foley is the winemaker at Pride, and the reputation
that the winery has developed for making stellar, complex and
long-lived wines is well deserved.
Join us to help welcome
Steve, Stuart and Elizabeth as we attempt to return their great
hospitality. You can hear from Steve's own words their lovely family
history working with the land, meet the warm and charming Stuart and
Elizabeth, hear their take on being in the wine business, and ask them
just about any question that pops in your mind. You can do all this
with several glasses of fabulous Pride Mountain wines sitting in front
of you.
The
featured wines are served as two ounce glasses. If you find a favorite
and would like a full glass just ask your bartender. These wines will
be available for retail sale while supplies last…
The cost of the flight will be $30 and will include the following wines:
2006 Pride Mountain Viognier, Sonoma County Retail $42, 5oz. glass $12
2005 Pride Mountain Chardonnay, Sonoma County Retail $37, 5oz. glass $11

2005 Pride Mountain Cabernet Franc, Napa Valley Retail $60, 5oz. glass $17

| The Jug Shop 10th Annual Penfolds Tasting
Saturday, September 15th, 2007
At Trader Vic's San Francisco
Our annual Penfolds new release tasting is finally at hand! Say farewell to summer and hello to fall with the new Bin series wines, including the Bin 707 Cabernet, as well as Magill Estate Shiraz, St. Henri Shiraz, RWT and, of course, the 2002 vintage of Penfolds Grange. This year you'll also have a chance to sample the premium portfolio of Wynn's Coonawarra Estate.
The tasting fee of $35 includes nibbles by the great folks at Trader Vic's San Francisco. While most know Trader "Vic" Bergeron for his inventive drinks beginning with his creation of tropical cocktails like the Mai Tai, he was also known as one of the first to promote the benefits of wine, California wine in particular. He began a lifelong quest to educate his customers (and many vintners!) about the burgeoning and bountiful California wine industry and was one of the first to compile a well-rounded California wine list for his restaurant. Trader Vic's has lately become one of the favorite haunts of Jug Shop staff for its convivial atmosphere and great service.
Come one, come all, but don't delay in making your reservation!

2004 CHAMBOLLE-MUSIGNY FRIDAY 9/14 & SATURDAY 9/15 Maybe it seems counterintuitive given the hype we are enveloped in concerning the 2005s, but this weekend we are going to showcase an exceptional group of 2004 Red Burgundies, all from Chambolle-Musigny. These are exquisite, classically-styled Burgundies that don't have 2005 price tags. See page 4 of this month's VVW News for tasting notes and prices.

2006 GRAMENON CÔTES-DU-RHÔNES TUESDAY 9/18 & WEDNESDAY 9/19 Gramenon produces a distinctive, unique style of Côtes-du-Rhône. They studiously avoid heavy extraction, ultra-ripeness and high alcohol, striving instead for purity, transparency and freshness. They bottle very early, well before the next harvest, to capture that freshness in the bottle. This tasting showcases their newly-arrived 2006s. These are unusual, intriguing Rhônes; some will even complement fish and seafood. Of particular interest are the Grenache-based cuvees "Les Hauts de Gramenon" and "La Sagesse", and the Syrah cuvee "Sierra de Sud". See the online version of this month's VVW News for tasting notes and prices.
1. 2006 Côtes-du-Rhône "Poinée de Raisins" (Gramenon) $24.00/btl $4.25/taste 2. 2006 Côtes-du-Rhône "Les Hauts de Gramenon" (Gramenon) $32.00/btl $5.25/taste 3. 2006 Côtes-du-Rhône "Sierra de Sud" (Gramenon) $32.00/btl $5.25/taste 4. 2006 Côtes-du-Rhône "La Sagesse" (Gramenon) $35.00/btl $5.50/taste 5. 2006 Côtes-du-Rhône "Ceps Centenaires" (Gramenon) $58.00/btl $8.75/taste 6. 2006 Côtes-du-Rhône "A Pascal S." Short Series (1-4) $18.00 Full Series (1-8) $36.00
2005 ZIND-HUMBRECHT THURSDAY 9/20 This is our first tasting of Zind-Humbrecht's newly arrived 2005s, featuring Muscat, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer. See the online version of this month's VVW News for tasting notes and prices. The Rieslings have also arrived; we'll pour them at the tasting bar next month.

2005 CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPES FRIDAY 9/21 & SATURDAY 9/22 This tasting features eight new arrivals from the superb 2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape vintage. It is quite a cross-section, with two moderately-priced beauties, three very exciting, ageworthy bottlings, and three superstar, "wine-of-the-vintage" candidates. See page 3 of this month's VVW News for tasting notes and prices.
1. 2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (La Côte de L'Ange) $40.00/btl $6.00/taste 2. 2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Cuvée du Vatican) $40.00/btl $6.00/taste 3. 2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Clos du Caillou) $65.00/btl $9.50/taste 4. 2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape "Vieilles Vignes" (La Côte de L'Ange) $65.00/btl $9.50/taste 5. 2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape "Reserve Sixtine" (Cuvée du Vatican) $72.00/btl $10.50/taste 6. 2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape "Renaissance" (Cristia) $88.00/btl $12.25/taste 7. 2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape "Vieilles Vignes" (Janasse) $125.00/btl $17.50/taste 8. 2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape "Reserve" (Clos du Caillou) $195.00/btl $24.50/taste
Short Series (1-5) $37.00 Full Series (1-8) $86.00
2005 BOUCHARD RED BURGUNDIES TUESDAY 9/25 & WEDNESDAY 9/26 A reliable source of stellar whites in recent years, Bouchard also aced their reds in 2005. Here are six Côte-de-Beaune bottlings. See the online version of this month's VVW News for tasting notes and prices.
1. 2005 Savigny-les-Beaune "Les Lavières" (Bouchard) $45.00/btl $6.75/taste 2. 2005 Monthelie "Les Duresses" (Bouchard) $45.00/btl $6.75/taste 3. 2005 Beaune "Clos de la Mousse" (Bouchard) $48.00/btl $7.25/taste 4. 2005 Beaune "Les Marconnets" (Bouchard) $58.00/btl $8.75/taste 5. 2005 Volnay "Clos des Chênes" (Bouchard) $98.00/btl $13.50/taste 6. 2005 Volnay "Les Caillerets - Ancienne Cuvée Carnot" (Bouchard) $110.00/btl $15.00/taste

AUSTRIA'S GRÜNER VELTLINER FRIDAY 9/28 & SATURDAY 9/29 Most of Austria's Grüner Veltliner is made for immediate gratification, zesty wines to be enjoyed in the year or two after the harvest. But Grüner Veltliner has the capacity to age and develop for an inordinately long time, and from the right vineyard site and in the hands of the right winemaker, Grüner Veltliner can rival White Burgundy in texture, complexity and potential for development. This tasting showcases this ageworthy style of Grüner Veltliner. See page 2 of this month's VVW News for tasting notes and prices.
1. 2005 Grüner Veltliner "Steinsetz" (Schloss Gobelsburg) $25.00/btl $4.00/taste 2. 2005 Grüner Veltliner "Hefeabzug" (Nikolaihof) $28.00/btl $4.50/taste 3. 2004 Grüner Veltliner "Erste Lage" (Setzer) $28.00/btl $4.50/taste 4. 2005 Grüner Veltliner "Thal" (Hiedler) $30.00/btl $5.00/taste 5. 2005 Grüner Veltliner Federspiel "Ried Achleiten" (Jamek) $35.00/btl $5.75/taste 6. 2005 Grüner Veltliner "Renner" (Schloss Gobelsburg) $35.00/btl $5.75/taste 7. 2005 Grüner Veltliner "8000" (Setzer) $45.00/btl $6.75/taste 8. 2005 Grüner Veltliner "Lamm" (Schloss Gobelsburg) $50.00/btl $7.50/taste

Greetings: Join us Wednesday, September 19th, from 4:30-7:30pm, when we welcome Dr. Jerry Seps, owner and winemaker of Storybook Mountain Vineyards to our Wine Bar. Storybook Mountain is literally the last stop in Napa Valley. If you drive north and continue past Calistoga, one of the last driveways you will see prior to crossing the Sonoma County line leads to Storybook Mountain Vineyards. It is a pristine tiny corner of this famous wine valley, with a lovely little winery, picturesque wooded grounds, and some old, well-situated Zinfandel vineyards. For Zinfandel fans it's a bit like heaven. It is certainly far away from the maddening crowds a little further south. If you are wise enough to turn into that particular driveway you will likely be greeted by an extremely polite, avuncular, professorial gentleman, Jerry Seps, sometimes known as Dr. Zin. Jerry is a doctor, a former professor of European history, but he left his academic life behind to pursue the more bucolic life of growing grapes and making some fantastic Zinfandel. Little did he realize that becoming a winemaker in Napa Valley also entailed a good deal of travel, a fair amount of salesmanship, some clever marketing, and a modicum of fame. The quiet life was not so quiet.
Jerry and his wife, Sigrid, purchased this 90 acre parcel in 1976, though the vineyards were first planted in the 1880's and the caves were dug shortly afterward. The property had long been abandoned when they fell in love with this wild place and they lovingly restored it to its current flawless beauty. After three decades of making legendary estate Zinfandels from several different aspects on his property, Jerry has the deserved reputation for producing Zins that can stand the test of time. His wines age gracefully like few other examples of this variety. To illustrate this point, Jerry was generous enough to offer us one of his last two remaining cases of the 1997 Estate Zinfandel to taste side by side with his 2004 Estate Reserve. It should be quite a comparison.
So join us and help us welcome this warm, friendly pioneer of Napa Zinfandels and hear his story first hand. It's an experience you will long remember.
The featured wines are served as two ounce glasses. If you find a favorite and would like a full glass just ask your bartender. These wines will be available for retail sale while supplies last…
The cost of the flight will be $30 and will include the following wines:
2005 Storybook Mountain Mayacamas Range Zinfandel Retail $30, 5oz. glass $9.50
2005 Storybook Mountain Antaeus, Zinfandel/Bordeaux Blend Retail $40, 5oz. glass $12
2003 Seps Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley Retail $65, 5oz. glass $18
2004 Storybook Mountain Estate Reserve Zinfandel, Napa Valley Retail $50, 5oz. glass $14.50
1997 Storybook Mountain Estate Zinfandel, Napa Valley Retail $65, 5oz. glass $18
Hope to see you all there! Debbie, Peter, Bo and the entire FPWM team.
