Steve
Pride Leads Us Through Old and New Pride Reds
Join us Wednesday, October 1st, from
4:30-7:30pm, when we welcome Steve Pride, General Manager and
Co-Owner, and Mike Campbell, Events/Hospitality Coordinator of Pride
Mountain Vineyards to our Wine
Bar. It is Pride family night at Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant.
Carolyn Pride is the matriarch of this historic Napa Valley wine
family, Steve is her son. Agriculture is in the Pride family's blood.
The Prides purchased the historic Summit Ranch in 1989 and its
subsequent development into a world class winery was the culmination
of a lifetime of farming for Carolyn and her husband, Jim, who passed
away in 2004 after a long battle with cancer. Jim Pride would say,
"Participate in quality." Quality has been the hallmark of
this landmark winery on top of Spring Mountain on the boundary of
Napa and Sonoma Counties. It's a long and winding road up Spring
Mountain, and the Prides have always made sure it was worth the trip
once you arrive. The views are spectacular, the setting is sublime,
the facility is top notch, the wines are terrific, but it is the
genuine warmth and friendliness you feel as you walk through the door
that sets them apart. Everyone there seems happy to see you, perhaps
still surprised that people make the journey up the switchbacks of
the road below. The friendly folks don't act like employees, it feels
more like you are visiting one big, happy family, and they have wine
bottles open to boot!
Bob Foley is the winemaker at Pride, and the reputation that the winery
has developed for making stellar, complex and long-lived wines is
well deserved.
Join us to help welcome Steve Pride and Mike Campbell to Ferry
Plaza Wine Merchant as we attempt to return their great
hospitality. You can hear from Steve's own words their lovely family
history working with the land, speak to Mike about their visitor
friendly tasting room, and ask them just about any question that pops
in your mind. You can do all this with several glasses of fabulous
Pride Mountain wines sitting in front of you as we compare some of
their new releases with some tasty selections from their library,
including their rare Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.
|
The
featured wines are served as two ounce glasses. If you find a favorite

Joli Vin
Thursday October 2, 6-8 p.m. $15

exciting Presidential campaign, we have decided to offer you the unique

Don't
miss our California Cabernet Tasting this Saturday, 10/4/08 from
2-5:30pm. $10 for the complete tasting. In addition, enjoy 10% off
the purchase of the tasting wines through the close of business,
Saturday. You can now order online! Simply click on any of the
selections below or visit www.sfwtc.com.
2005 Pride Mountain, Napa Valley $66.00 ($59.40)
For those of you who love to get away for the weekend and visit the wine country,
there is no better wine tour than Pride Mountain. Up the windy and
narrow road that leads to Spring Mountain, lies Pride Mountain. Half
of the property is on Sonoma soil while the other half is on Napa
land--where the fruit is grown. Deep smooth flavors of ripe cherry,
currant, and chocolate saturate the palate, while an unctuous viscosity
coats the tongue and mouth.
2005 Crocker Starr "Stone Place" Napa Valley $84.95 ($76.46)
Pam
Starr is one full-of-life lady who (according to her) barely escaped
life as a dental hygienist. Well, dentistry's loss is all of our
vinous gain! Famous for her Sauvignon Blanc and small lot Cabernet Franc,
Starr also produces extremely limited amounts of single vineyard Napa
Cab. Sustainably farmed with extremely low yields, the resulting wine
is thick, rich and extremely full-bodied with elegant notes of violets,
spice box and vanilla cream laced throughout.
2005 Nickel & Nickel "Sullenger Vineyard" Oakville $74.95 ($67.46)
Nickel
& Nickel is the sister label to Far Niente and Dolce, two of Napa's
most famous properties. While Dolce is Napa's equivalent to Chateau
D'Yquem and Far Niente specializes in Bordeaux-inspired Cabernet
belnds, Nickel & Nickel only produces single vineyard, single
appellation, single varietal wines.
Something that no one else in the valley is doing. The 2005 Sullenger
Vineyard Cabernet is beautifully perfumed with aromas of dark fruits.
Cherry and black cherry fruits are layered with sweet herb, spice and
cedar.
2006 Twenty Rows, Napa Valley $17.95 ($16.16)
The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes for this wine come from two vineyard sources in the Napa Valley: Diamond Mountain
and the Yountville foothills. Bright yet plush, with black cherry,
blackberry, currant, licorice, chocolate and smoke flavors, all neatly
layered for complexity. Firm, solid tannins provide good structure,
weight and a great mid-palate grip. Long finish rounds out this wine.
90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot.
2005 Orin Swift Cellars, Mercurey Head, Napa Valley $74.95 ($67.46)
According
to Orin Swift, the old saying that great Cabernet Sauvignon makes
itself, is most certainly true. Of course it helps to have access to
such high quality fruit which Orin Swift is privy to. Half comes from
the famed vineyards of Gary Morisoli in Rutherford while the remaining
half comes from Doug Wight's Lewelling and Taplin Vineyards in St.
Helena. And the resulting wine really reflects the pedigree of such
treasured fruit displaying deep, bold and resonating notes of black currant, kirsch, toasted oak, vanilla bean and ground espresso.
2004 Ladera Vineyards "Lone Canyon" Napa Valley $66.95 ($60.26)
The
2004 Ladera Cabernet Sauvignon is truly an expression of the exquisite
fruit grown in the Lone Canyon Vineyard. The unique terroir allows the
fruit to showcase the vintage at hand. Lone Canyon Vineyard is located
on the flanks of Mt. Veeder in the western hills of the Napa Valley.
The 2004 Lone Canyon Cabernet is exuberant in color and the aromas are
alive with spicy and herbal fruit. The nose provides earthy, brambly
undertones with brilliant dark fruit. The wine is layered with textures
that are bold and masculine yet maintain tannins of a velvety character.

Don't
miss our Languedoc Tasting this Saturday, 10/11/08 from 2-5:30pm. $10
for the complete tasting. In addition, enjoy 15% off the purchase of
the tasting wines through the close of business, Saturday. You can now
order online! Simply click on any of the selections below or visit www.sfwtc.com.
France's
Languedoc region is a significant producer of wine far outnumbering any
other major winegrowing regions in terms of total number of bottles
produced and total number of acres under vine. Although once known as
the country's "wine lake" the Languedoc is now home to some of France's
most innovative producers. Before the mid-1990s, the wine coming out
of this prominent region was rather innocuous at best; good for a
non-descript glass of red or white but not much more than that. Today,
this impressively vast region produces some of the country's most
exciting wines. No longer considered the bulk wine region of France,
the Languedoc is now home to a new guard of winemakers who are quite
literally transforming the landscape of this picturesque region. This
elite group has a knack for combining time-honored, traditional French
winemaking techniques with the latest in international styles and
innovations, never hesitating to take lessons from the New World.
2006 Domaine du Chateaux Gaujal, Picpoul de Pinet, blanc Coteaux du Languedoc $10.95 ($9.31)
Citrusy
and bright, Picpoul de Pinet is lively enough to be an aperitif,
complex enough to drink with cheese or seafood and affordable enough to
indulge in a second bottle! Picpoul has been produced in Pinet for
centuries. The citrusy-flowery aspect goes with any seafood, including
mussels and steamed crab. It's also good with mushrooms and,
surprisingly, excellent with egg-based dishes like quiche, frittata or
soufflé.
2007 Chateau La Roque, blanc Coteaux du Languedoc, Benedictins $20.00 ($17.00)
"Bénédictins
is a beautiful barrel-fermented blend of Marsanne, Roussanne, and Rolle
from a clos originally planted by Benedictine monks. Subtle, classy
perfume, all with finesse. Ample, honeyed finish. One of the best
whites from Languedoc I have had the pleasure to taste. Most whites at
this price from around the globe are from machine-harvested grapes,
large tanks, imported yeasts, and don't forget the oak chips some throw
in their vats for flavor. This ain't that!" (Kermit Lynch)
2007 Fontsainte, Rose Corbieres Gris de Gris $13.95 ($11.86)
Year
after year, Fontsainte produces some of the best Rose on the planet and
at a price that won't break the bank. Juicy and plush with spicy red
fruit undertones, violets and wild strawberries and a touch of green
mango, this Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and Carignan blend is harvested
entirely by hand.
2006 Chateau d'Oupia, rouge Minervois, Tradition $13.95 ($11.86)
"Château
d'Oupia has produced the ideal bistro wine. Dark, ruby-colored, the
wine is wonderfully clean and pure, with an exuberant personality, and
gobs of rich, peppery, red and black fruit...Bravo to proprietor André
Iché!" (Robert Parker, Jr.)
2004 Mas Gabinele, Faugeres $29.95 ($25.46)
Faugeres
was granted AOC status as late as 1982 thanks to the tireless efforts
of winemakers and vineyard owners throughout the region who understood
the vast untapped potential of these hillside vineyards. Mas Gabinelle
relies upon a blend of Carignane, Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre for its
traditional blend. Rich and chewy with generous notes of fresh cherry,
tarragon, blackberry and pipe tobacco spice.
2005 Domaine Leon Barral, rouge Faugeres $25.00 ($21.25)
"Didier Barral is one of the champions of the biodynamic movement in France
and is highly respected among his peers for his uncompromising respect for the
environment.
Didier's red Faugères, grown in rugged schist soil, displays power,
rusticity, and incredibly fresh, pure fruit." (Kermit Lynch)
2005 Chateau La Roque, rouge Coteaux du Languedoc, Mourvedre $15.00 ($12.75)
"If only we could discover the secret of La Roque's Mourvèdre cuvée and clone
it elsewhere. Pure Mourvèdre has a tendency to be a bit squarish or hard-edged,
but at La Roque they seem to have found a solution. The spicy, earthy perfume
and medium body make it quite versatile at table." (Kermit Lynch)
2006 Chateau La Roque, rouge Coteaux du Languedoc, Numismae $25.00 ($21.25)
For
centuries, Saint Martin de la Garrigue has been producing esteemed
wines in the village of Pézans. These steep, hillside vineyards
benefit from the Mediterranean's maritime influence, which helps to
balance the grape's inherent ripeness. Warm days and cool nights are
the perfect combo when the goal is produce that wonderful balance of
ripe fruit, bright acidity and velvety tannins. This blend of Syrah
and Mourvedre offers up copious amounts of raspberry and plum followed
by fresh herbs de Provence and cedar.
