We are in cardiology right now...and today, I learned that health professionals consider 3-4 glasses of wine/night (daily) is considered alcohol abuse...and alcohol abuse is consider a risk factor for some cardiovascular diseases.

Funny thing isn't it? I'm sure most of you would disagree...I had to try so hard to bite my lip.

Yep, this is the "standard" for being considered an alcoholic (I think the standard for women is about a glass lower). The thing is I'd consider someone an alcoholic if hey can't give up drinking. I think your class books are considering that much alcohol daily a problem to a person's health and thus equating this to an alcoholic.

What if you drink 3 glasses before midnight and then 3 after midnight? That's ok, right? They're different days...

We weren't diagnosing alcoholism itself today. It was more of something like "Mr. Jones is a 62 year old male complaining of shortness of breath. He has diabetes mellitus, hypertension, blah, blah, blah...and he drinks 3-4 glasses of wine each night." The 3-4 glasses of wine/night was only one factor.

We use what is called a CAGE questionnaire to look into their drinking problem:
C-Cutdown...do you feel that you need to cutdown?
A- (I forgot this one)
G-Guilt-Do you feel guilty for drinking?
E-Eyeopeners-How often do you use eyeopeners?

In my professional opinion, I would say that if your drinking doesn't hurt you financially (you pay your bills before you buy your booze), it doesn't affect your work, doesn't affect your personal relationships, and you are fine with it...then there is no immediate harm.

Phone call to Mrs. TBird:

BellaDonna: "Hi Mrs. TBird....in my professional opinion I would say that if your husband's drinking doesn't hurt you guys financially (you pay your bills before you buy your booze), it doesn't affect his work, doesn't affect his personal relationships, and he are fine with it...then there is no immediate harm. "

Mrs. TBird: "Who the hell are you?"

BellaDonna: "I'm one of TBird's wine friends online..."

Mrs. TBird: -click-...as she runs to pop open 25 cases of wine and pour them all down the drain and unplug the computer too
