I am going to a wedding in Kiev in a month and then plan to spend a couple days in the Crimea afterwards. I have had Crimean sparkling wine (the pride of the Soviet elite) and found it to be at least drinkable if too sweet (and probably a very welcome respite from vodka)! Does anyone know who the top producers currently are, or even better, have any recommendations where to go? I realize this is a stretch. Thanks.

I had some Krimsekt Krimskoye bubbles that wasn't too bad. Not sure if it was specifically from the Crimea but it tasted pretty good and it was definately Russian. I have heard some Ukrainian cabernet is not too bad.

I've also heard that some dessert wines from Massandra winery are well worth getting your hands on.
