Andrew, the best surfing spots are between Lahaina and Maalaea.  None of them are marked; just drive along, looking out to the ocean.  Eventually you'll come across a group of guys & girls surfing.  Go there.

North of Lahaina I don't recall seeing more than one or two surfers together.  There is an awesome surf school in Lahaina that uses the area just south of Lahaina harbor; perfect training waves.  Typical to see everything from 5 year olds to 75 year olds learning how to surf there.

Surfing on Maui is good, but the north shore of Oahu is better surfing.  Personally I go to Maui for the food and the snorkeling.  It does not get any better than Honolua bay.

Thanks for the info Randy.  Do you remember the name of the surf school in Lahaina?  I was looking at a couple online and most offer a surf safari where a guide takes you around to  different spots on the island.  Sounds pretty cool.  Oahu might be a bit too much for me, I am more of an intermediate on the east coast. I'm sure that translates into a beginner on the island.

I'm not positive, but I think it was goofy foot school. There are several schools there; it is the same center that houses Pacific'O, which is a wonderful Luau (and I hate Luaus). Don't do the safari thing, driving around maui is not ANYONE's idea of a good time. Beside, just use your rental car to drive down near Chez Paul (pretty good restaurant too) and have a good time surfing/snorkeling.

Andrew, I went to Maui on my honeymoon about 2 years ago.  If you drive over to Lahaina there will be a couple of schools there and plenty of other places to rent a board.  The wave is nothing exciting, so be sure to rent a long board.  If you are more experienced there are plenty of good waves to be had.  Check here; http://www.wannasurf.com/spot/North_America/USA_Hawaii/Maui/
