Try Tripadvisor.com for reviews.

The Standard is #24 on the list in LA; the W is ranked # 38.

He's in town in LA, so I took the message to mean that he wanted to find some place reasonably close to Spago; as opposed to someone from out-of-town that might want to see all parts of LA during a visit. I agree that Shutters is a wonderful hotel, but it's not really close to Beverly Hills.

I'll cast my vote for the Peninsula. If things haven't changed, they have a rolling check-in/check-out which should work out great if you are from in-town. Basically, you can check in at any time and your check-out time is simply 24 hours after you checked in, per day. So you could check in after dinner on Friday, and stay until Sunday night.

The other thing (if it hasn't changed) is that they have a complimentary Rolls Royce limousine for guests heading to Beverly Hills for shopping or dining. Nice perk.
