I will second the Grape Tray in that area.

Gus Fleener (gfleener) moved FROM Fresno a year or so ago. Hopefully he will see this post and chime in. Or maybe you can send him a PM for a quicker response.

Grape Tray does have great pricing. Ol' Docs has the best selection. Catalano's Market has a pretty good selection and fair prices. Bailey-Cannon is another choice but a little expensive. Whole Foods might also offer a different selection.

Try Slates for great food and a good time. Try the Elbow Room for a run-in with the FSU coaches (and a great wine list with awesome calamari steak) Campagna's is very hip and quite reasonable if your used to dining in Napa or SF.

If you don't mind a little drive, check out in Imperial Dynasty in Hanford. It's the only 5 star place in the central valley. Surpiorior Dairy, also in Hanford has the best ice cream shop I've ever been to. Further out off I-5 is the Harris Ranch Steak House with some nice cuts of beef.

The Vineyard Restaurant in Madera is old school but has a nice selection.

Vintage Press is also good in Visalia with another great wine list.

Hope this helps!

This place has been there for decades. It has earned a great reputation. I've never been there but I have been told it is the best Chinese food in the state.

David, I have yet to dine there but am told it's not Chinese food. Here is a review I found:

"Located next to the Taoist Temple in Hanford's historic China Alley, this award-winning steak and seafood restaurant features world-class continental cuisine. Especially recommended are the restaurant's nine-course gourmet dinners. The wine cellar is well-stocked. I have heard, but have not yet been able to confirm, that the restaurant was a favorite of U.S. President Ronald Reagan. It is said that he flew into Hanford especially to dine at the Imperial Dynasty. The restaurant does not offer Chinese cuisine, but it is filled to overflowing with remarkable Chinese antiques and artifacts. Located at 306 China Avenue, Hanford, (559) 582-0196. "

I remember hearing of this place from my father back in the 60s.
Gotta go there some day.

I grew up in Fresno and taking a date to the Imperial Dynasty was considered to be the ultimate. It certainly brings back some great memories. The location (approx 30 miles from Fresno which was considered a long long distance in those days), the mystique of the alley entrance and the elegant decor and sublime food made this the ultimate experience. It was like going to the Blue Fox or Ernies in San Francisco in the late 60's and early 70's.

Fresno?

I am sending a letter to Fresno today though. It is going to the IRS processing center there. Maybe I could come and visit some of my money.

What the hell does anyone go to Fresno for? Almonds?

You're sure not going to get any surfing in.

Stopped by to stay a night with my sister who is in the Fresno oeneology program, before heading up to Sacremento for a friends wedding. I attended a single blind syrah tasting at the school with the wine club that was interesting to say the least.

I understand it has the potential to be better than Davis if it isn't already.

Say hello to your sister from me (assuming you only have one sister or she is the sister I have met).

Hang loose (in Fresno)
