| I'm taking dinwiddiejr for a college visit on Thursday and Friday to Drexel. Can anybody recommend places to eat near there for Thursday night? We will be staying at the Sheraton Univ. City, but anyplace reasonably near would be appreciated. BYOBs or places with reasonable corkage are especially appreciated. | | |

| A few things:
Philly is weak on BYOB's.
On Sansom street (actually Penn's campus) is an unusual place called the White Dog Cafe. It is between 34th and 35th streets (really close to Drexel).
If you want to drive over to the Delaware waterfront, there are a few good wine destinations.
Please PM me....

| I've actually been researching BYOBs in the Phila area recently for an upcoming event. I've been looking at Mezza Luna and L'Angolo. Maybe dbw can shed some light on L'Angolo if he knows anything. I read good reviews on both. | | | |

| Tony... I actually know very little about restaurants in the city. There is one nearby Drexel. It's the Philadelphia Restaurant School, where aspiring chefs make interesting dishes for the diners as part of their training. IIRC, corkage is $5 there. It's at 42nd and Walnut Street, about 7 or 8 blocks from the Drexel campus. I believe the menu changes often. | | | |

| Are we talking about the city in which budman lives? He doesn't know anything about the restaurants? I shudder to think where he spends his discretionary income. | | | |

| I totally forgot about Mezza Luna!
We had our Brunello event there in March! Nice environment and good, wine friendly Italian food. It is not "near" Drexel, it is in South Philly. The reality is it is only 10 minutes from Drexel.
If you want BYOB, go there.
Bring Italian juice.....

| I don't live 'IN' Philly. I would never live in the city. Most of my disposable income is represented by a spot in my basement!!! | | | |

| I just read a writeup about Vetri on chowhound, they thought it over hipped and overpriced. | | | |

| I second the suggestion by dbw4 regarding the White Dog Cafe. The food is fantastic and fresh. Most of their ingredients are from local farmers/growers. | | | |

| We ended up eating dinner at Penne in the Inn at Penn.
The food was pretty good, but what I really liked was the number of wines that were available by the flight. There were 15 flights of wine available, 2.5 oz. pours. Mostly Italian since the restaurant is Italian and the wine list is primarily so. Large number of wines by the glass also. The Somm. had even make a list of wines by the glass that were recommended with each dish on the menu. Prices were reasonable and the service was excellent. All wines in the flights are also available by the glass.
The flights I had:
FLIGHT 6 $14.00 PIEDMONTE REDS Dolcetto, Le Strette 2002
Freisa d'Asti,La Zucca2001 Barbera d'Alba,Pio Cesare 2001
FLIGHT 4 $19.00 VALPOLICELLA Valpolicella, Righetti 2000 Valpolicella Classico Superiore Ripasso, Corteforte 1999 Amarone Classico, Corteforte 1998
