Dr T, are you flying into Munchen (<-how Munich is spelled in Germany)? If you are the airport is a breeze to navigate. One tip. After you clear customs look for the "Zone Central" where money is exchanged and exchange a little bit of money before heading off to the rental car section. It is quite a hike back if you need money before leaving the airport.

Parking is a bit of a pain in both Munchen and Wein (<-how they spell Vienna in Austria). Once the car is parked I'd definitely recommend the subway in both cities. Quick, clean and efficient.

In Wein be sure and see Schonbrunn Palace.

While in Munchen head to the "Stadtmitte" or center of town and visit the Marienplatz where they have the Glockenspiel. Pretty nice area for walking around. Just off of the Marienplatz is the original Hofbrau Haus where you can grab a beer. Diagonal across the platz from Hofbrau Haus is Augustiner Gastatte. We had a casual dinner there that was pretty cool. Community benches throughout so you eat with whoever. More important, the beer there is by far the best beer I've had in my entire life. Period. Be sure and get the Augustiner Edelstoff "Helles"
and Augustiner Weissbier.

You're right. I don't have them handy on my keyboard so I usually leave them off.

Dr.T
Vienna does not have a subway but it does have a trolley system that works just as well. You can take a trolley to schloss shunbrunn which is awesome. I'll put together to restaurant and hotel suggestions, later when I have some time.

Man, I would have bet you money I walked downstairs to catch the trolley/train I took. I'm sure it ended up above ground at some point.

WIML is spot on about the St. Augustin Hoffbrau. It is the best beer I have ever tasted, nothing else is remotely close. It comes by the liter and is far stronger than domestic beer. After two, I was feeling NO pain.

You might be right.. I guess I'll have to go back and make sure. Either way I think it's pretty easy to get around. You can take the trolley out to the Heurigen which is a blast.

There is a restaurant in Vienna that a good friend of mine swears by every time he's in town. It's called Drei Husaren (Three Hessians, I think) and he says it is fab. He's a foodie, so I trust him.

Load up on chocolates while you're there. Try some Grüner Veltliners while you're there too. White wine won't kill you Doc!

I went to Oktoberfest twice while I was stationed in Europe (1981 and 1990). I'm envious -- have a great time!
