Cheap would be:

With table service, under $100 for two

Without table service, under $25 for two

I've had a lot of $300 and up dinners for two in NYC, and loved all of them but one.  This time, I want to try some local haunts that are not hoidytoidy.  Just good FOOD, and maybe a reasonable choice on wines by the glass.

If there is anything like that in NYC, I'm sure this board would know...also, is there an Indonesian restaurant in NYC?  I'm looking for a good rijsttafel dinner like the ones I can find in Amsterdam...

Thanks in advance,

saut

All the places I posted above & others (like Lupa, Otto), unless you go crazy with the wine(s), should be in the $100-$120 range. There was another 2 places in the Alphabet City-area, but I forgot the name of those places. Perhaps, j_b will chime in here. He recommended those 2 place & both places were wonderful.

Granted, the price range of $100-$120 or so is probably the most challenging to find for fine dining. The alcohol is what does it in.
In NJ, a BYOW state, it is easier to find a place in that range.

Also, in the Broadway district near Esca, check out Rachel's. It is very good & in that same price range. Unfortunately, Kitchen 22 & Kitchen 82 closed. Both were in that range as well.

Of late, we have had nice times at North Square on Wash Square North - accross the street from Babbo I think - very reasonably priced, good food, low corkage.

Mermain Inn, Red Cat et al, are also nice relatively inexpensive places to eat.

Isn't WD less expensive?  What about looking in Zagats - they have a section on best buys.

Also, if you like Chinese, there's always Chinatown.  Down near Ave A, there are lots of cheap Indian places.

Just got back from NYC.  Dined at L'Atelier one night and Annisa's another.

Hands down Annisa's beat out L'Atelier on every dish, including desserts.

I would be careful of places in China Town unless someone you trust recommends a place. Same goes for cheap Indian places in NYC. And, rjs, are you referring to WD-50?!? It is not in the price range saut has in mind.

Thanks all for the recommendations. We had a great trip, and enjoyed eating out at different places. We tried North Square...delicious and reasonable...and an Indian place in the Village that was delish. The latter was a cheap dinner because we drank beer! Go figure...

Alta:

A nice tapas bar. Tapas bars are popping up all over Manhattan now. This one is nice, it is Ok, though one can find a better tapas place for the money. Still, a nice place. A young, loud, alive, great party-type crowd & atmosphere that one would expect from a restaurant near the NYU that area. The alive, young crowd make for a good time/evening.

Balthazar:

Afterwards, we went with friends to Balthazar. Always a hit, nice drinks, & also a young, loud, alive, great party-type crowd & atmosphere. I swear that place contains a collection of some of the hottest women in NYC. :-)

I posted in another section, but no one seems to be home... Anyone available for a small OL/dinner out on October 23rd?

Crickets are chirping in the VC events section...

Went to 11 Madison on Saturday night - I have to say I was expecting more. The food was good, some bites were even great - and even though it showed finesse and creativity, it seemed to lack harmony and soul in a lot of spots. I was musing to my friend that I would take a restaurant like Komi (here in DC) over the food presented that night.

The dining room was beautiful, and the service was top notch. The sommelier was also very good, and steered me correctly toward a bottle of G. Barthod Chambolled Musigny that was exactly in line with the style of wine I enjoy.
