| Grabbed a sandwich to go today from Salumi - the daily special of stuffed veal. It was everything veal is not supposed to be - tough and fatty and incredibly greasy. A very disapointing effort but as I'd already left the area, I couldn't return it to complain. More than 2/3 of the slice of veal was fat. I guess I should stick to the cured meats.... | | | In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is...

Ahhh, Canlis. good sigh...
Winetex, you would have loved last night. We were guests of the Canlis family so everything was superb. Tremendous wines, every course meticulously prepared. It really is a special place. It's alot less stuffy than it used to be.
They're having a Bob Foley wine dinner in January that just sounds too good to miss.
Queen, did you get to see Mark Canlis? I went to college with him.

| Amazing! jaime, I know where and when you went to college. That's my connection with Mark Canlis. The son of close friends of ours went to school with him, and apparently you too. Small world, huh? | | | |

| Heh Board-O, that's funny. I wasn't close friends with him, but hung out with him a couple of times. He was housemates with some of my other friends.
Next time I go to Seattle, I'll definitely make it a point to visit the restaurant for dinner when Mark is there.

Hmmm, that's too bad, I'll be there this afternoon, I will mention that. What was it stuffed with, fat??

| Mark was out on his own for a while, then decided that maybe the family business was the way to go. He was very personable. I don't think the pretentiuousness had rubbed off on him yet. | | | |

| Yeah, Mark's always been a very nice guy. I saw him in NYC last year (I think) - he was working at Blue Smoke (a well-known BBQ place) IIRC. | | | |

I want to get to Blue Smoke, keep passing it by, but that reminds me -- the Frontier Room on 1st in Seattle (next to Queen City Grill) is pretty darn good for BBQ, Seattle could use a Blue Smoke. Chef hails from Baton Rouge.

| Some other updates - Market Grill at Pike's Market. I LOVE Mark's chowder. I've had some pretty nasty hangovers as a result of the martini bar list on page 1 and I swear there is something in his chowder that puts me back together again. This morning reaffirmed that.
Dahlia Lounge. Probably my favorite of the Douglas restaurants (not a big fan of Lola). Kpak is spot on with the bakery next door. Liz made up some caramel and pecan cake-like thing that almost killed me. I still have a sugar high.
The Brooklyn. Steak/seafood house on 2nd and University. Was really not all that impressed. $34.95 for a New York steak that was good, but not really worth $35. If you're going to spend that much money on a steak, go to the Met or El Gaucho. Just a little too frou-frou for a steak house.
The Perennial Tea Room. Down from the Pink Door in Post Alley in the Market. Not a restaurant, but they have some GREAT tea you can buy. Drinking some Jasmine Pearl China Green as we talk. Yeah, it's not really a manly man drink, but it works out to be pretty cheap and it's a hell of a lot better for you that the eggnog latte I had this morning for breakfast. If you like green tea.

| Wow, been a year. Was in town for a few days leading the "Week in Cities" trip for school. Thoughts on food/bars:
Chiso - sushi place in Fremont. Really enjoyed this place - everything from the fried tofu in my miso soup to the sashimi sampler that was just amazingly fresh. Yummy lychee martinis to boot!
Suite 410 - new bar on 4th and Stuart, next to the piano shop. Nice place, a little cramped. Mohitos were very good and the bartenders were pretty cool.
Del Rey - nice place with two lounge/bar areas, decent appetizers. Much better for bigger groups.
Pyramid Brewery - Next to Safeco, Gordon Biersch of the north. Yippee. Couldn't drink any beer because I was going to MSFT right after :-(

| We went to Seattle in Auguest of 2004. One of the great meals we had was at the Swingside Cafe in Fremont. Fun little area to peruse the antique and other funky shops. The meal at Swingside was wonderful, only spoiled by the extremely hot (unusually so) weather. But the wine list is great, the food even better. Nothing fancy in terms of the restaurant, but very friendly, and a wonderful meal.
We also had a great meal at Flying Fish. We were told there would be a 45 minute wait unless we wanted to it on the patio on the sidewalk. It was a great seat, wonderful food, great wine, wonderful service and a wonderful show watching the people walk by (never saw so many tattooed women in my life)
One other meal that was memorable was at the Pink Door. Not for the food (which was very good) but because it was "Prom Nite". All the servers were dressed in prom clothes and you got to vote for the King and Queen of the Prom. An absolute blast, lots of fun and very funky. I don't know what it would be like on an ordinary night, but that night was a blast.

| Haven't been to Flying Fish (although I walked right by it yet AGAIN). Pink Door is a perennial favorite, primarily for what you said - food isn't out of this world, but it's always an experience. Maybe it's the 300 lb door you have to open when walking in from the alley... | | | |

| Hit Shiro tonight and ate more than I thought was humanly possible. Sat at the sushi bar and told Shiro to start plopping stuff down in front of me... Started with some amazing sea urchin (in season now), a salmon/onion combo, maguro, toro, sake, scallop, yellowfin, some other stuff that I still don't know what it was and tempura eel for dessert. $53, including tip, but damn, I ate half the aquarium :-D
Barwise, we hit Vessel and Suite 410. Vessel just opened and was pretty cool; it's next to the big theater and actually shares the roof, which is kind of bizzare once you're inside. Suite 410 is a little hole in the wall, which is probably great when it's slow, but not when it's standing room only. Both are recommends and a great step up from last night's $2 happy hour menu at the Contour Club.
One other note - Tom Douglas opened another place (shocking, i know) called Serious Pie. Pizza joint, supposed to be really, really good.

| Serious Pie last night. Communal seating at large tables is annoying. Got the cherry pepper bomb and fennel sausage pizza, which was delicious. Tried the special (salami with arugula) and have to tell you, I'm not a fan of greens on my pizza.
Off to Palace Kitchen for Tom's famous creme dessert (cross between flan and a non-torched brulee). Delicious!!!
Nightcaps at Suite 410 (weird crowd), The Apartment (the I'm too sexy crowd), and Amber (I'm too sexy for the The Apartment crowd). I knew there was a reason I drink wine... FWIW, the mint julep is back in and featured at every bar.
