Can anyone provide a website or a book(recent) where I can reference what the most planted red and white varietals in the world are?

I vaguely remember that in the the mid nineties it was the Airen(white of Spain) and Trebbiano/Ugni Blanc for whites. Not sure for reds. Any help would be appreciated.

According tothis article , worldwide statistics are hard to come by. You will note the following:

The OIV produces the best overall statistics on the worldwide wine situation. Unfortunately they are currently two years old, and their accuracy varies, depending on the thoroughness of the country that reported them. One thing that is missing is solid varietal information. Since many countries do not track varietals, currently neither does OIV.

That is the problem I am running into. So far it looks like Grenache for red and Airen for white, unfortunately this is from a few years back. Thanks for the links.

I believe the world's most widely grown white wine grape is Rkatsiteli.

That was number three in the info I saw. I wish I could find something up to date.

Airen is number one. White grape from Spain that is pretty light bodied. If you've ever tried it, you'd be hard pressed to figure out why. Pretty innocuous stuff.
