Hey everyone i am new to wine but have always had an interest in it. I am trying to start a collection early, now i am a poor college student so i cant blow tons on wine but i can spend money on a monthly basis to improve my collection. I just bought a double climate controlled wine cellar that holds only 30 bottles but that should be enough space for right now. I would like to stock my cellar with roughly, 10 dailies, 10 weeklies, 5 collectible and 5 ultra-collectible. So i am just seeking help from anyone that knows their stuff, i live in central pa and our wine stores really dont offer much. Thanks.

Any particular varietals, regions, styles, etc. that are of particular interest?  In other words, what do you like?

And if your local wine stores aren't up to par I would recommend looking around on the internet.  Winetex, who is very crafty and helpful, compiled the great information that you will find in this useful thread:

Well thats the thing i know i like robert mondavi cabernet but thats the only wine i have had recently. I have had many others in passing but since i am now 21 i would like to officially get into wine collecting. All i know is i really like wine, so im asking where do i start. Do i start by buying a box from a vinyard or do i buy an assortment to get to know what i will enjoy and like?

That sounds like a plan.  Go and purchase a bottle here and a bottle there of different wines to sample..........definitely an easy way to identify what you might enjoy.

Incidentally, you mention that you enjoyed the Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon.  Do you remember what the bottle said i.e., Coastal, Napa, Reserve, etc.?  And if you think you like Cabernet Sauvignon than I would personally suggest that you seek Cab's from Chile, Argentina, and Washington State -  great values can be found.

IS there somewhere i can go to learn about all the different types of wines? Like i said the cellar only holds 30 so i think what i will do is create almost like a checklist and try to stock it with different wines, then i will try a bottle a week, pairing it with many different foods that are recommended. This way i will be able to narrow it down to the wines i like.

Your local wine stores will have tastings which is a good way to try lots of different wines. Here there are Adult Education wine courses at the colleges where you can take a class and try LOTS of wines. The one I took went through six different wine regions with 8 or so wines tasted each class. That course totally got me interested in wine enough to travel to wine regions in Europe. I had already been to the California areas, another way to taste lots of wines.

Also you can check out tasting notes to see if it is a wine you are interested in.
