Here is an inexpensive red blend from South Africa that packs a lot of dried red fruits and is ready to drink now or the nest couple of years or so as it has some sturdy background structure that belies it's up front fruit flavors. Those flavors includes black berry, cherry and peppered tannins that suggest that this could even get some benefit from some short term cellaring. I was not expecting this tp be much but to my surprise it has turned out to be a fine dinner wine to be served with a hearty pizza or maybe a good New York steak. excellent QPR as well as it's priced for only $7.99 ! If you see this wine around in your local shops be sure to pick up a bottle or two. You won't be sorry you did. I will definitely purchase a few more bottles just as cellar defenders.. I am awarding this wine at 86 and 1/2 points. For $7.99 this offering is a steal. A good every day quaffer that won't break the bank.

p5, I agree with you, the Goats Do Roam is an excellent QPR, if not quite the 89pts you gave it (85-6 would be more accurate IMO). It's more of an easy drinking quaffer than anything else though.
The Goat Rotie by the same producer is a good step up (for a couple more bucks) and IMO delivers even better QPR.

Both wines are a view to some of the excelling value that is available from SA at the moment, and also a sign that quality is taking major steps forward too.

Yeah you're right. Not an 89 pointer, but 86 or 87 would be more in line. None the less I was surprized at how well it was made and the excellent QPR.

There is also Goats Do Roam in Villages which is a step up as well. I'm not a big fan of the standard GdR as I can get better wines at the same price but the Rotie and Villages are worth checking.

If they are also good tasting wines, any better! There are some other brands that makes joke of the names about the european originals, and I think that’s cool.

There’s also white wine with same name, Goats do Roam 2004, Western Cape (Fairview Estate).
Anybody tasted that?

I've seen this one about but haven't tasted it, to be honest it doesn't really seem that exciting.
From the description it seems like a bit of an easy quaffer.
To my mind Fairview does much better reds than whites, mind you I have heard some good things about their 'La Beryl Blanc' (Made from chenin blanc). I've tried the Fairview Oom Pagel Semillion and was quite impressed, but I found the fairview viognier a little one dimensional with peaches peaches and more peaches (i.e. not to my taste).

For a nice cheap white blend from South Africa try the Flagstone Noon Gun.
With a little more cash to burn try the Sadie family Palladius or the Vergelegen white blend.

Goats do Roam has just been a little more successful in prolonging it.
