  • 2004 Tikal Alma Negra - Argentina, Mendoza (11/14/2008)
Popped and poured. Deep, inky purple. Initially, the nose was dominated by aromas of leather, earth and a touch of dried fruits. After about two hours it slowly unfurled to reveal a perfume of raspberry and spice. Medium-plus body, the flavors of blueberry, raspberry, and dried cherry are complimented by additional nuances of leather, black licorice, and expresso. The finish has length and is accented by the fruit and a green, herbaceous note. Chewy tannins are complimented by just enough acidity to keep this from feeling blowsy. Obviously made in modern style......yet at the same time rustic in presentation, no doubt due to the Bonarda. Hypothetically, this wine almost reminds me of a leathery Rosso di Montalcino blended with a spicy, modern Spanish Garnacha. Kept getting better in glass throughout the evening. Should improve with another 2-4 years. (90 pts.)
